According to my Infomartion  they had TWO ships ordered from

   Daesun shipyard in Busan.

But that they had OPTIONS on FOUR more of the type...Any information on whether they

    exercised those options?

Seems the four options are Daesun Yd 550-553.  No sign of them on firm order book yet.
But sister HANDY STRANGER (Yd 554) is under construction for Grecomar, Athens.

Thank you Davidships for the information.

It's a brave bet ordering ships in these market conditions..I hear the cost of ships is low..( relaively)  But so are  freight rates.

  Interesting times ahead.

@ ozzy 76

All the players in the handy market ordered already or working on it
The fleets are aging. Clipper has a lot new for example. I know that ISN getting more to the last editions starting in 2014,,, bulkers,,special handy size,,which are much more "utilized" i.e. more trips/cargoes are rather old when they oder 10 years old.
The re[air costs going up and up,,the surveys getting tougher and tougher and so on. So best,,replace them. also a big consideration is new regualtions which cost easy 1 mio to update to newest regs,,like Ballast Water Management,,, so building new is not a real bad idea at this time !!!!!
NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!

@ Captain Ted.

Good Point , about the Ballast Water treatment..I've been out of the business too long.
I remember them talking about this in 1995. in the Marine Engineering Review. So, I guess it's finally becoming a reality.

Just as an aside I like these handysized Bulkers..I think they offer the Officers and crew a better sea life than container ships.

At least "sometimes" you get a night or two in port ..Those box boats are boring  With 6 or 8 hours in port and running on a liner service.  I like the idea of NOT knowing your destination from one port to the next.

It's a real pity General Cargo days are gone.

Thank for the info about ISN. ( I had to Google them..I shall look out for their new ships on Shippspotting!!!!  And Clipper also.

P.P.s..I also like the look of those Supramax ships of 56,000 DWT

@Ozzy76

Arklow did not declare their options. They will take delivery of only two ships in this series.

@ Ozzy76

Ballast Water Management faces at present a real problem for all involved. The implementation was always dragged and postponed and nobody really knew when it will be really coming. Companies who developed systems, (UV systems which supposedly kill off aquatic micro life for example) stopped really going behind further development, shipping companies which faced huge investments did not pull through in the belief that it will not come that soon. In other words, all players involved were not behind it one for not seeing making the money invested back the other thought I sell/scrap the old ships and build new.
Now the regulation comes in force and a lot are not prepared and or is not developed. Even today, ships builded now are starting their life under the old regulations, partly because the systems on the market are not fully approved, which of course means for the owners that they might install a system which is then not approved and must be replaced in worst case or upgraded to the least.   As so often in Shipping everybody waits again for more extended time lines. But if the Canada/USA insisting to go ahead it will be big head ache for all involved.
NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!

I've noticed that some green-hulled Arklow ships have been renamed with 'BBS' instead of Arklow as in 'BBS Spray' , is this an offshoot company of Arklow?

Understand these 6 all sold.

BSS Sky and BBS Surf managed by Kopervik in Norway.

Unsure of the others now and who is owning / managing these (BBS Sand, Star, Sea and Spray).

@ C. Henry..I guess they sold them to buy bigger ships like these two and the 6 from Ferus Smit which I think are 8,500  DWT.

@ Phil...Thank you for the update on the status of the options.
I guess the company will test the market with these..Or perhaps they may be short of manpower with the new tonnage..Who knows? when I say manpower I mean superintendents and the like.

@ captain Ted..Those ISN have quite a good website. They have plenty of pictures of their fleet.
As for ballast water..The IMO always sails in a convoy with the slowest ships setting the pace.
I read that somewhere before.
