« on: December 25, 2006, 05:33:24 AM »
Northrop Grumman Ship Systems this past week (December 23, 2006) has delivered two ships to the US Navy.

From its Pascagoula, Mississippi yard Northrup Grumman officially transferred the USS Kidd, an Aegis guided missle destroyer to the US Navy.  The Kidd is the 24th Aegis guided missle destroyer built by Northrup Grumman.  The Kidd suffered hull damage from the massive Hurrican Katrina in August 2005.  The Kidd was christened in January, 2005.  It is the third US Navy destroyer named for Medal of Honor and Purple Heart recipient Rear Admiral Isaac Kidd Sr., the first flag officer killed about the USS Arizona at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1945 and the first in the Navy to meet death in action against any foreign enemy.

Northrup Grumman Ship Systems also transferred the 684 foot amphibious transport dock ship New Orleans to the Navy.  Built at its New Orleans shipyard, the New Orleans is the second  Northrup-Grumman ship in the San Antonio Class.  The Kidd rode out Hurricane Katrina while moored in the Mississippi River.
