The Labrador coastal boat Northern Ranger was delayed almost six hours in Postville Thursday because its passenger safety certificate had expired on Aug. 15.

Transport Canada wouldn't let the ship sail until the matter was cleared up.

"We're currently reviewing the problem internally with our company to ensure that this never happens again," said Chris Newman, the vice-president of marketing for CAI Nunatsiavut Marine, the ferry's operator. "And make sure that certainly our passengers never have to encounter any further delays because of regulatory problems."

The vessel was supposed to depart at 3 p.m. Labrador time, but never got going until 8:40 p.m.

There were 82 passengers on board
