Retired aircraft carrier to be sunk off Florida
« on: February 16, 2006, 11:27:29 PM »
According to an Associated Press report, today the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency issued a permit to allow the retired US Navy aircraft carrier Oriskany to be sunk off Pensacola Beach in Florida.  The Oirskany will be the first of more than 20 retired Navy ships to be sunk in order to create artificial reefs.  Plans are to tow the ship from Texas to Pensacola in early March with the sinking to occur on March 15.

The Oriskany had a long life, seeing action in both the Korean and Viet Nam wars.  Pensacola is the home of U.S. Navy Aviation so it will be ending its life where naval aviators start their aviation careers.

Hopefully someone from this list will be their to photograph the event and post photos.
