"Jolero" (ex Smit tug?)
« on: April 10, 2012, 11:39:36 AM »
I'm wondering if anyone can put an ex-name/ IMO number to this vessel, described by her Nigerian owners as a 2500 BHP utility vessel. She looks like an ex-Smit tug in the photo.

Hi Phil,

I've asked a few towage experts to check. Possibly we'll find the answer "with a little help of our friends"....

Brgds,
Rob.

Hi Ian,

Thanks for that excellent bit of detective work. Very curious how two separate Nigerian companies claim to operate the same ship under two different names. Hmmm !

Cheers
Phil

I have scanned the book "Smit International 1842-1992" picture for picture and the JOLERO looks a bit like the SMIT LABUAN, but that one is not built by Damen.
The mentioned call sign of JOLERO is 5NIZ4 but that is belonging to a tanker.
Searching the internet I also came to the mentioned vessel as mentioned in the other replies, or a possible sistership.
I think the picture used for the JOLERO on the company website is not showing the real vessel.

Thanks Ian for your input  ;D

Pieter,

I don't think it's a different ship - the picture shows the right vessel. The details (largely) match those for the "Robo"

I also went down the callsign route. 5NIZ4 actually does not come back to a tanker, but another AHTS belonging to the same Nigerian company - the "Acantha".

Cynicism aside, what I suspect, is that "Robo" has been purchased by Jolyn Marine from Lenimar Ocean and will be renamed "Jolero". The callsign is probably being transferred from their other vessel. It's a slightly pre-emptive move to show her on their website already, but that's not unusual in the offshore sector.

Thanks again guys

Phil

Hello,

about the code 5NIZ4 indeed some confusion.
vesseltracker.com says :  Type of ship: Tankers
other sites: Utility vessel.............

It looks as if all the vessels listed by Jolyn have been allocated names that are either unreported, have not yet happened or (most likely) they are a phantom naming system within the company.  Note that the last two letters of each name are derived from the currently listed name - also the pdf datasheets were all created on 7/4/2010 (July or April?)

JOLEOD = ODODO (IMO 7528831/5NIZ5)
JOLEMA = probably CO-OPERATOR II (IMO 7392969) and renamed MADONNA [photo ACANTHA]
JOLEAC = ACANTHA (IMO 8120038/5NIZ4) [at Port Gentil 3/4/2012 as ACANTHA]
JOLEAN = possibly ANGEL (IMO 7818688)
JOLELJ = AUTUMN TIDE (IMO 7121102)[photo as "LADY J", unlisted]
JOLEMO = MORGAN (IMO 8311572/5NIZ2)[wrong photo]
JOLERO = ROBO (IMO 8224315)
JOLEST = JADE STAR (IMO 7368114)
JOLETI = TIFFANY (IMO 8207501)

Hi David,

Great detective work. With that in mind, it looks like my initial cynicism was justified.
