Hello friends;

Enrica Lexie, an Italian crude oil tanker, was involved in a shootout with Indian fishermen.  Armed  self defense crew of the ship mistook the fishermen for pirates and opened fire, killing two on the spot.

Hmmm... An event like this certainly complicates any discussions of putting armed guards on merchantmen.  I've been thinking for some time now, that arming merchant vessels might ultimately be one of the few options for dealing with piracy problems, especially in very risky waters, but this makes me aware of some of the challenges involved...

As Italian but also as master mariner I hope that the situation will be clarified. It is very sad that two people have died, but it is very difficult that the two Italian Navy security armed guards opened the fire easily and against the boat. They are professionists which must report immediately to the Headquarter of the Italian Navy Special Forces in Brindisi and to the Italian Ministry of Defence, so before firing they must think two times...
The accident happened onboard an Italian flagged ship considered Italian territory afloat, it happened in international waters and it involves two Italian Seals. I'm very curious to know the results of the VDR in order to know how much the ship and the fishing boat arrived closed and if there were other crafts in the area!
Onboard the tanker there were 19 Indians crew despite the fact that in Italy there are thousands of seafarers ready looking for jobs. I hope that this sort of protest will lead to a change in the mind of the Italian Government to let Indian crew onboard Italian ship, as well as any other action useful to keep clear the two seals from Indian jails. For your additional info a man who lived in my city is blocked in jail in India since 2008 waiting for the trial for a fake murdering. Every month there is a postpone of the trial, is this normal?

Two Italian mariners were taken into custody yesterday after days of speculation.  The Caption of the ship has claimed that he "did not know" of the shooting.  Crew is hired by the Dolphin Shipping who owns the ship while mariners are deployed by Italian Government.  Please see the news here:

In India the legal system is too sluggish.  No court case comes to an end easily.  They keep on postponing month after month.  Probably the Judges here do not like to finish off the cases.  Where was your friend arrested?  Where is he now?
