A strange ship in Rhodes greece +/- 1955
« on: November 11, 2011, 05:23:23 PM »
Hi All

On an arial photo, from somewhere around 1955, of the old town of Rhodes Greece, I came across a peculiar ship in port.
It seems to have a longwire antena across the length of it,
around the stern is some kind of cage construction,
on the port bow is something ??,
if it was a modern ship it has on top of the mast modern radar ??,
and midships it has a realy big raised platform marked with big letters FKW.
It seems to have derricks in front and aft of the platform, but with the antennas above.
It is all very strange, never seen anything like it before.
The wall running away from starbord is about 35 meters.
Is there anyone who can tell me anything about this ship.
Regards Rudolf O. Roffel

HI RUDOLF

the antenna wire is for SSB radio communication (Single side Band) normal for vessels at that time. Also the location is normal. The derricks are rather short and fwd the bridge
which means they are not reaching above the construction midships and also they can work easily under the antenna. This leads me to say that the construction are living quarters
they have seemigly no top entries, like hatch openings for cargoes which supports that, also
they seem for a hold rather high above the deck.
Other then that, I would say, Navy vessel possible for mine clearing. The two constructions around the stern and fwd port side, no idea here.

NOW!!!,,,if we could get rid of the sailors,,how safe shipping would be !!!!!!!!

It's most probably the USCG Courier, transmitter ship for Voice Of America. Indeed an ex C1-M type.
