The former Queen of the Atlantic is now stranded on the beach in Alang India.:-x  :-x http://www.vg.no/pub/vgart.hbs?artid=126671

The supreme court in India have halted the prosess, but probably to late. here she is on the beach.

This report may be a little premature. According to a local agency report, she was still waiting off Alang as of this morning. However, in reality the information was probably prepared last night. Other local sources have also reported that she was not beached last week as planned because strong currents prevented the tugs from making headway.  I get an Alang port report emailed here every day, so tomorrow's report should confirm or otherwise.

OK, thanks Harald. I guess you mean that she is lying on the bottom in shallow water, 1.5 km from the shore. It'll be interesting to see how they get around that little problem

Sad news for us, but what may be even worse, is that from what i understand, due to restrictions we may not see much of her final days.

Oops double post, sorry

But in thinking, what will happen to the QE2 when the time comes- will she suffer the same fate or will the loss of the the France polarize the Liner community to push more towards conservation and preservation?

Sad and harsh as it may sound, cruise lines are just the same as any other shipping company. They are there to be successful and make a nice profit for their shareholders or principals. it would make no sense economically for them to be involved with ship preservation. The only hope is for some vessels to be purchased by non-maritime interests and converted to floating hotels, exhibition centres and the like (ala Queen Mary at LA) However, the cost and red tape involved is very often prohibitive, which is why many of these projects fail.
