For some month I track Maersk Emma on Marine Traffic and get news whenever the ship goes in and out the tracking range.
Just just got an update and checking up where she is at present I thought, if anybody has got an idea how many and which ships sunk in the last week when the horrible eartquake and tsunami was hitting Japan?

Or is a tsunami on the water not too dangerous to ships?

Kind regard to everybody
Galadriel, at present in Melbourne!

A tsunami at sea is not dangerous for ships. A tsunami hitting a port or a ship close to shore is dangerous. Some info on ships in port grounded or damages by the tsunami can be found here: http://log.wrecks.net/?tag=tsunami

Seeing as no-one really knows how many people died in this awful tragedy and rescue efforts are ongoing I doubt that at this stage there is too much concern for how many or what ships were lost. There are reports (and a few photos) to suggest that some ships in port were driven ashore, but I rather think there needs to be some perspective in this

Phil,

You are right indeed. My thoughts go out to those affected by the horrible tragedies affecting the good people of Japan. Although Japan does not seem to request much help from abroad, I would invite all Shipspotting.com members to support the relief efforts.
I am myself a "Field Partner" with Doctors Without Borders (Medicins Sans Frontieres), whose brave people do fantastic work in Libya and other places where people are in need. Hoping that Japan and Libya will soon get relief from their troubles,

If not tsunami, then an earthquake at sea may be dangerous to ships. The Norwegian tanker IDA KNUTSEN (built 1958) was close to an earthquake-center as she was passing off the Portugese coast in february 1969. Even if it was very deep water there, she got so big structural damages to hull that she was condemned.
However, a Greek company bought the ship and carried out large repairs to her, and after that she sailed for 10 more years before being sold to shipbreakers.

I could not agree more.  MSF is free from any political or religious tilt - a have a niece working with them in a camp in Bangladesh for Burmese refugees.

Can't get that page to open.  I have seen some reports of damage to larger ships, but many smaller ones in port must have been severely damaged or total losses.  Two particularly struck me:

Confirmed casualties so far include a ship that was under construction at Japan

David,

In fact today's Tradweinds reports a rather different story to that mentioned elsewhere. Apparently 100+ shipyard workers at the Yamanishi yard had a lucky escape by sheltering aboard two ships in the final stages of construction there, the 24,000 dwt bulkers SIDER JOY and TORIPAN. The ships were washed ashore and reportedly damaged, though to what extent is unclear. However, the most important and reassuring thing is that all Yamanishi shipyard workers survived and are accounted for. Ships are designed to float - buildings are not, hence it seems that they made a very wise decision.

Does anyone know the name of the ferry/cruise ship that was reported lost with 80-100 people aboard during the tsunami?

There was no ferry /cruise ship lost with 80 - 100 people aboard. That piece of news was a mis-report the Yamanishi Shipyard incident, which is referred to above by Davidships and myself.
