BLUE PUTEES & HIGHLANDERS
« on: February 22, 2011, 05:27:59 PM »
Just finished looking at deck photo of BLUE PUTTEES docked in st. john,s. Two(i presume)deck hands clearing open deck with 2 snowblowers. My god is this what we will have transporting rigs & trailers across cabot strait for next few years. I hate to be negative but isn,t this a bit out of whack for year 2011. Trailers & rigs crossing  on open deck with snow, sleet & freezing spray & on arrival frozen in & then shore crew having to unshackle this crazy mess. Will need more than snow blowers. One positive thing though is they will need more staff to get traffick off at both ports. Hard to believe this is happening in 2011. Sure hope they don,t put my car there in march when i cross. Someone please get back on this with a positive response asap because i,ve just about had it with MA.

just imagine you will have to break the 1" thick ice off your car/truck and shovel it out to get off the boat in pab/n sydney or if it was a really icy/rainy trip it could be frozen to the top deck  and it can happen very easily
  :-D  :-D

i'm assuming you were looking at my photos on my blog. There were two deckhands using snow blowers and one or two I think using shovels.

That sucks..
Someone eluded to the Atlantic freighter not having issues with icing on deck.
The freighter didnt..because a mob of angry passengers were not trying to get off..

-The snowblower patch
The Snowblowers could easily be replaced with a New Holland or Kubota ,with a dual stage blower on an empty deck...or clean up in minutes, after a unloading..

Heres the trouble ..
On a new empty deck, like now, its not a problem ..
After traffic is a problem ..the snow ,Ice is contaminated by what ever polution that may have dripped into that snow/ice from the vehicles.
In most of Canada- municipalities, business can no longer dump snow in the ocean ,lakes or ponds.
That contaminated snow/ice/ will have to be trucked of the ships to an appropriate marshalling area..

So how cheap are these ships .....now?

The Blue Puttees and Highlanders have 2,5 decks and 2.860 Lanemeters. Caribou and Smallwood have 1.092 Lanemeters. Even when the uncovered part of the open deck is completely empty the capacity will be much greater than before. So how many times will the ships really be full in the wintertime?

I am quite sure it would not pose a real problem. There is snow in Europe too and many Roro-ferries in the north sea and the Baltic operate with open decks.

By the way, Highlanders is still in Bremerhaven and should have left a while ago. How is the weather on the atlantic ocean right now, could that be a reason?

KAI R, don,t think north atlantic weather is problem causing highlanders not departing bremenhaven. The north atlantic has been in turmoil lately with strong winds & large waves but all other traffick is moving. Hope she,s not a wharf hugger. Any ship designed for sea has to face it sooner or later, that,s what they are made for. I,m sure there must be other problems that are being ironed out. Just my opinion, but i have been wrong before. We don,t need another wharf hugger over this way.
