MMSI and IMO numbers
« on: January 19, 2011, 12:17:35 PM »
Good morning everyone.
I'm running chartplotting software in conjunction with an AIS receiver,
the problem is the software only displays the MMSI number.
Anyone know if a database exists to give the IMO number when the MMSI number is entered.
               Many thanks Doug.

Doug,

If you type an MMSI number into an equasis search, you will get the corresponding vessel details, including the IMO number.

Hope that helps
Phil

Actually, I have that wrong Doug. Equasis still lives in the ancient land of callsigns, so typing in an MMSI number won't help. Sorry 'bout that  :-\

However, various AIS sites such as vessel tracker or marine traffic will display a IMO number when a MMSI number is entered.

Phil: You were right first time: Equasis DOES give MMSI nos - and call signs - and IMO nos (which are the only ones I am interested in).

Yes, Equasis does show MMSI numbers Bob, but the point is that you can't SEARCH by MMSI number, which is I think what Doug requires.

Cheers

Phil,
Thanks For your suggestions, have been giving Equasis a go.
The problem is the search criteria, ships name or IMO number, know either of these and
the MMSI number is listed.
Problem arises when the ships transponder is programmed to transmit the ships name
only once or twice daily, have found some small craft that never transmit their name.
This leaves you with the problem, you know the MMSI number, you don't know the ships name
and a number don't transmit their callsign frequently either.
You are probably now totally confused by what I'm whaffling on about,
But thanks a lot for your most welcome suggestion
                      Cheers Doug.

Hello.
Try this link:
http://www.itu.int/online/mms/mars/ship_search.sh
With the MMSI you can find the name, sometimes not updated and in this case sometimes not valid to find in Equasis the ship, but also the call sign and this is good for finding in Equasi.

Hi Doug,

You can also use Siitech.com to search with the MMSI number. Once found, you'll see the IMO number.

Hi Steve,
That site's quite a handy little number,I particularly like the links to the
ship's photos.
It definately runs faster than the Marinetraffic site, which appears to be down today,
think I will stick with the Siitech sight in future.
            Many thanks again,
                    Doug.
