Ship spotting book help please
« on: May 26, 2010, 10:01:52 AM »
On the recommendation of member Fred Vloo (thanks Fred) i have joined up in order somebody might point me in the right direction.

I live in england but travel to holland 2 or 3 times every year to fish on the rivers Waal and Ijssel, whilst there mainly for the fishing being an engineer by trade the ships that ply their trade along the rivers offer a pass time whilst i am waiting for the fish to bite.

Last year on the return from holland I met a ship spotter from Lancashire who was sitting a table near me on the ferry, he had with him a spotting guide to the ships of the Waal (Rhine) giving basic details of each ship, how i wish afterwards that i had asked him about the book.

Anybody any ideas what the book might be and/or where i might get hold of a copy, maybe the guy i met on the boat might be a member or even remember the conversation we had

any help most appreciated

Indeed; Binnenvaart 2010 mention all inland cargo vessels,
Sleep- en Duwvaart 2010 mention all inland tugboats and pushers.
But only under Netherlands flag.
Publisher/printer is "De Alk", editors mr Wim van Heck and mr Ad van Zanten.
These two books are published each year.

Thanks Gents looks like i may have tracked it down then, unless anybody knows anymore, i just had a feeling this book had more about all the ships not just Dutch ones, i also thought it was in english.

but i am getting old and have a bad memory.

I bought the ST publications "Tugs, support & misc vessels"
To be honest, not much info & not too impressed  :(

Agree Bob.  It's not much more than a list.  Very little in the way of technical details.  A smatter of quite nice illustrations but little else of value.

try this web site of "Vereniging de binnenvaart":

http://www.debinnenvaart.nl/pagina/38/

they publish books, index here:

http://www.debinnenvaart.nl/boekenindex/

for identification of inland vessels I use their extensive database:

http://www.debinnenvaart.nl/schepen_home/

Tip: when taking pictures of inland vessels make sure you get the ENI or EU number
on the side or aft of the superstructure. Many inland vessels have the same name.
