Searching for the name of a ship scrapped in 2001
« on: April 28, 2010, 05:28:53 PM »
Hello, shipspotters, I am hoping somebody might be able to identify a ship (very large, possibly large crude carrier), that I saw being beached prior to scrapping at the shipbreaking yards in Chittagong, Bangladesh. On either side of the bow were the initials OVA. I have not been able to find a ship by that name, but have been advised by Lloyds register that its IMO number might be (IMO 7381489 ????) The date of the beaching was mid / late march 2001. I have several images of the ship should that be of any help. Any help or advice anyone could give would be most welcoome. Thanks.

Hi Stevo, thanks for your reply. Could you tell me what the initials OVA would mean. They were painted (huge) on either side of the bow (like a name) It doesn't appear to be a name. The ship I saw was taken apart days after it was beached, so I don't think it could be the  'Sunrise

Hi Brendan,

there has been a bulk/oil carrier scrapped in March 2001 whose last name (when being scrapped) was OVA. But my information says she has been scrapped in India, not Bangladesh.
Originally she was the 1975-built Bjorgholm (IMO. 7389584; 1981 renamed Fjordaas, 1985 Zenith Gothia, 1986 Apache, 1987 Niobe, 1988 Ocean Commander, 1991 Akova and finally 2001 Ova).

Best regards,
Jens

Hi Brendan,

I tend to think that your vessel is the one Jens suggests - the ex- AKOVA. It is common practice for ships to be renamed for the final voyage to breakers, often by painting over part of the previous name, hence OVA. Unless, OVA was written on a part of the hull where you wouldn't expect to see the name, it is unlikely to be anything other than the ship name.

Having said that, there is really only one way to get a more positive ID and that is by posting any photos that you have.

UPDATE: I have just seen your photo and if you look at the full size image it is just about possible to see two painted out letters in front of OVA. To me, they look like "AK"

Hi Knuddle, thanks for that, looking at that picture i'm not quite so sure my ship could have been the AKOVA, mine looks more like a tanker

Hi Jens, do you think there is any possibility that the OVA scrapped in march 2001 in India, might actually have been scrapped in Bangladesh. I have heared of ships originally sold to indian shipbreakers being sold on to Bangldesh's shipbreakers. I have looked at an image of a ship called the AKOVA, that was suggested might be the OVA minus the AK, but that is a container and does not look like the 'OVA'

Hi Brendan,

well, there's always a chance, isn't there?:-)
Judging from what I've found it's the only vessel that matches your criteria (minus the place of scrapping).

She was a rather large OBO (Bulk/oil carrier), 256 m (LOA), 65,803 gross.
In 1998 her status was changed to total loss (though I don't know what happened to her) but she wasn't scrapped until March 2001.

Unfortunately I don't have any photos of Bjorgholm.

Best regards,
Jens

Edit:
And I agree with Phil, the first two letters seem to have been painted over. Looks like (Ak)Ova to me, too.

Brendan (and Jens)

I'm fairly sure that the AKOVA is your ship. Its very possible that she was resold to Bangladesh breakers after being initially sold to India.

IIRC, she was a CTL after a fire and explosion and hung around abandoned in a damaged condition for a few years, before being sold for scrap. She was the largest Turkish owned ship at the time.

Hi Phil,

really thrilling to dig into the history of a vessel scrapped years ago.
But now I'm at a loss, what's IIRC?:-)
(CTL = constructive total loss if I'm not mistaken...)

Brgds,
Jens

Thats really interesting Phil, maybe would explain why theres not really much info about her. Do you know how I could find out all about the ships history and find out exactly where and which company scrapped her.
