Thanks

Pros: 10x Optical Zoom and 8.1 mp

Cons: A bit bulky

More information on the FujiFilm Finepix s5800

Kind Regards
Cody

It really depends on your budget and whether you wish to trade off budget and convenience for image quality. Any DSLR will provide superior results, especially in low-light situations. However, DSLRs are heavy and bulky, you have the inconvenience of having to change lenses between shots, and to get a decent zoom range you have to spend a lot of cash to get extra lenses. Personally, I would rather have an ultra-zoom bridge camera and my camera of choice is the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38 (or FZ35 if you're in the USA). It has a zoom range of 27 - 480 mm (35mm equiv), image stabilisation, good low-light performance for a non-DSLR, a host of manual controls as well as an excellent auto feature for those who just want to point and shoot. It's also very light and easy to carry around, fitting in a large coat pocket if need be. The best thing is it only cost me 260 quid. There are other ultra-zooms out there made by Sony, Canon, Olympus, etc but Panasonic cams usually come out on top in the ultra-zoom sector. I would check out sites such as www.dpreview.com and www.dcresource.com for more info.

Brgds
Phil

New guy here. I use 2x Canon EOS 1Ds (1Ds and 1D mk II) and an EOS 40D. I cut my photographic teeth on the mean streets of NYC after college on the 80s, shooting mainly B&W as well as chromes (slides) for UPI and later AP. I gradually made the switch to digital around '03'-'04', when I purchased a 10D and later a 1D, though I still shoot film (slides) just to keep mentally sharp and focused.

Were now at least two using canon 1DS mark2 now.
Its a superb tool, however i just start using it and it shows the problems with the Bigma lens. Definitely not good at 500mm. I will have to learn the tricks of the trade  to put this kit to the best use before looking for better lenses. I saw some bird specialists doing great with a full frame and the bigma.
Thomas what lense do you use?

Hi Hadock,

As for glass, I use several...

400mm f2.8L (older late 90s era that I acquired from my newspaper days)
300mm f4L
80-200  f2.8L

and a variety of wide angles

I am a bit "old school" as I still prefer Fixed Focal lenses over zooms. Like I said, I grew up (photography wise) in an era, where zooms still had a dicey reputation at best. That said, todays zooms are light years from what they were in the 70s and 80s, it's just that "old habits die hard".
