Greetins, new spotter amongst you all
« on: January 05, 2010, 08:05:38 PM »
Hello,

My name is Thomas, and I reside in the Houston area. I am a former wire service photographer, now working the commercial and stock photo arena. I am also a former plane spotter (though I guess I am still one deep down inside), primarily the commercial jets, my haunt was of course IAH. However, shooting one CO 737 after another became very tiresome after some 10+ years of doing it over and over from almost every possible venue, never mind the increasing hassles with security (though it should be said that Houston Airports Systems, has been very accommodating to the local spotting community).

On a trip to Galveston a few years back, an unknown interest in Ship Spotting was born. While I may not be able to spot a bulk carrier from a tanker, approaching the Bolivar Roads, I am learning. I have amassed a decent collection of "ship pics", some of which can be see on my Flickr page, located in the Transportation set.

I hope to add some work to Shipspotting in the coming weeks. I hope to become more familiar with this fascinating sector of the transport industry, though these forums and it's participants. Any tips and or advice would be greatly appreciated.

A special thanks to Gabe, whom I met at Morgan's Point yesterday afternoon for hooking me up with this site. BTW, any Houston area ship spotters, be warned, Morgan's Point is being fenced off, though the area as you turn in will be left open.

Thanks,

Thomas

Hi Thomas

Let me add to Glenn's welcome to this site with its opportunities to communicate with other enthusiasts..

It will be of help to you, and help the Admins who run the site, if you review the FAQs reached from the Main Menu on the Home Page.  In particular, see

Uploading Photos

and
the FAQ for site standards at http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/xoopsfaq/index.php?cat_id=12

See also how to explore the site at http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/xoopsfaq/index.php?cat_id=28

Hi Glenn and Clyde,

Thanks for the welcome. Indeed I went over your criteria for photo submissions before signing up. While it is too bad that silhouettes are not encouraged, I can certainly understand why after reviewing the DB. That said, I certainly have a large selection of shots that fit the site's standards.

I see that there is no way that one can search via a particular port, i.e. the Port Of Houston, New Orleans, Long Beach, ect.....Are there plans to add this as a function and the near future?

Again thanks for the welcome, I look forward to becoming an active member of the community.

Thomas

Hi Thomas

I am very pleased to hear that you checked the criteria (site standards) before signing up.  Some members do not do that even after signing up.  They take up Admin time which would be better spent on helping members.

If you add the port name to the search key used you will find photos with that name included in the description.  All photos must show a location as well as the date in the description.  Of course the location may not be a port.

There is a category for Harbour Overview images.  See http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/myalbum/viewcat.php?cid=52
That has a category site standard at http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/xoopsfaq/index.php?cat_id=49

Regards
Clyde
