Ship Detail Register
« on: December 28, 2009, 01:24:16 PM »
I am setting myself a task for 2010 and that is to build up a public register of ships, giving details of name. call sign, imo number mmsi number, year of build, flag, tonnage and class of ship, could anyone suggest what software I should use to make a presentable display for viewers.

Thanks in advance.

On the assumption that there are 55,000 ships in service and you do not take a break or complete any changes /updates to fleets then you need to input approx. 150 a day. I think the only software will be a pillow.

Bearing in mind that I am retired and have all day to work on it, I still think its better than sitting on my backside and watch the world go by, I am not stating that I would complete the 55,000 ships that you state are out there.

Hi Geoff

Admirable aim indeed - suppose you would want something that gives a decent way of searching the database. Might be a headache to keep up to date, but good luck to you anyway Geoff.

Good joke Chas  :-)

Being at an age when one often retires, but instead working 7 days a week at present, I would opt for the backside watching the world go by.  Especially if it involved sitting at a location where ships were passing by.

About 2 years ago there was a discussion of a photo filing or tracking system that seemed to have the characteristics that you are looking for.  Several people spoke enthusiastically about it; most were posters from the U.S.but that is all I can remember about it. My expertise with computers is strictly limited to "user friendly" but I have seen many people that have data bases for books, railroad locomotives/photos, ships and so on so there must be something out there.  Perhaps a trip to the computer store or a visit to a more computer oriented forum might be worthwhile.
My blog with narrative and more photos is located at:
http://magogman.blogspot.com

read the introduction and also there are about 5 different blogs of ships and railroads

Don't know if it helps, but some suggestions might be as follows (if you allow on-line database, not the one hosted on your own computer, I suppose such online database management services provide option to download (and save for safety) a back-up copy of data):

1.
http://dabbledb.com/
Free Commons plan — all data public
Up to 15 users can edit data
Up to 100,000 entries per application
Choose your database name
e.g. free-data.dabbledb.com
No encryption, attachments, logo or custom colors
otherwise (data not public, etc.) you pay USD 24 per month - I suppos (http://dabbledb.com/pricing)

2.
http://www.zoho.com
1000 records in free plan only  :(
you would need a paid plan

another kind of option...

3.A.
just build a very simple Website and embed a database or Excel file with your database built on your computer...
there will be no "search" feature available (directly on the website) for users...
you will have to change (replace) the database file (made available on the Website) whenever you want it to be available in up-to-date form...
some people do this...
I think someone is making available a good database of tugs on his Website, but I do not remember the address now...
one of the many free of charge opportunities to build and host a website is:
( see also: http://sites.google.com/site/projectwikitemplate_en/ and http://sites.google.com/site/sitetemplateinfo/tips/replace-spreadsheet )

or

3.B.
upload your database file (whether it is a spreadsheet (eg. Excel file) or database file) for sharing onto one of services like this:
http://member.thinkfree.com/member/goLandingPage.action
here you give users some kind document (your database) of search capability on-line... not perfect but bether than nothing...
you might use also Google Docs, see:
- http://docs.google.com/templates?q=database&sort=hottest&view=public
...or any of several other similar free services on the Web...

4.
remember (paid) zoho from point no.2 ?...
zoho is a kind of "online office application suite"
from "suite" (for your declared task) the best will be either database (online) apllication or spreadsheet application...
other similar (to zoho) options are discussed here:
- http://www.socialmedian.com/network/online-office-apps
- http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9007884/Online_Office_Suites_The_Winner_Is_Clear
- http://www.crn.com/software/213001020;jsessionid=SRSOAUYL0GARRQE1GHRSKH4ATMY32JVN

5.
search for potential answers and solutions here:
- http://www.asksam.com/wpbrochure.asp
- http://www.vb123.com/toolshed/99_dbweb/01whatmethod.htm

but in any case (of using online office applications) I would build two databases pararelly (one in onlie office application and one - as a "back-up copy") on my own computer...
despite using "polsteam" for my nick I have NO personal (professional) or business connections with the company of the same name

I understand that Mirimar is based on Microsoft Access whilst we used Microsoft Excel as the starting point for www.shippingdatabase.com then had to get a programmer to make it presentable.

MySQL seems to be the best at the moment.
Google for MySQL
MySQL Community Server is for free
