Do ship owners and managers check here occasionally?
« on: December 18, 2009, 02:33:08 AM »
Just curious if ship owners and/or managing companies might occasionally check this site just to see if their ships are where they are supposed to be.
Hmmm.... wonder if they do and then see a ship spotted here on a date when its supposed to be somewhere else.

Would not think so, in my later years at deep sea some of the ships I was on had a direct tracking system to the owners offices so they knew exactly where their ships were, like an early version of AIS, can't see them browsing through forums.

Besides all the tracking systems, IAS, etc etc I am certain that a 100% of the shipowners expect a DPR (Daily Progress Report) from all of their vessels on a daily bases.
So they know where their vessels are, all of the time.

I know of some people working for ship owning companies who are also ship spotters and enthusiasts, so they might check here for that reason, but not for any tracking of ships.

Although I very much doubt that shipowners will have much professional use for this site, it is conceivable that certain shipbrokers/marine information companies (or their employees) might see shipspotters as an additional, FREE source of information on such things as laid-up ships and ships going for scrap!!

I would think so by trafic mgrs if only to occasionnaly confirm the level of cargo (draft) and number of containers.
Or  even report unscheduled incidents.
More so to check on competition!
And they likely add a free picture to illustrate their reports.

hadock- how can you confirm the level of cargo on a ship by using this site?
How can you tell the draft of a ship by using this website ?

And how on earth can you see , by using this site the number of containers on a ship?

you are sniffing glue mate !!!

Yeah, that makes sense.  With all the modern tracking devices available, it would seem that checking an outside website like this one would be unnecessary.

Yeah, that's possible, using this site to check on the competitor.

I do not mean an exact number but look at my photos you can see container ships with very few boxes on deck  very much more so this year than last .You can actualy count them if you care.
In North Atlantic trade you do not insist in stacking boxes on deck if you can do otherwise.    Also look at the drafts and it confirm she is  light. See the difference between Teval and MSC BALI  And anybody with an eye  and  some knowledge  can tell the difference between a light bulker and a loaded one . And  agreed there might be ballast but at todays fuel costs guess what: It is minimal!
But I surely think you might remain polite!

I had an occasion where I was contacted by the operations manager for a shipping company who saw a image of one of thier owned and operates ships on this site taken by me, he first questioned wether the name of the ship was correct, pointing out to me that the ships orders were to sail from Newcastle, Australia and  was meant to be going to Port Pirie in South Australia to discharge and then sail for Indonesia, but instead the ship was at Risdon near Hobart.  He was toataly confused, pointing out to me the ships orders had nothing about coming to Tassie.  Secondly he asked if he could use the picture that he spoted of mine on this website of mine on their webpage.  I said yes.

He never did find out why the ship had been sent to Risdon and who changed the orders as they all had to go through his office!

So some of the shipping companies from my experience use this site as a resource.

G'day Benbow,

Unless I've read wrong, I think that's a little rude. Calling everyone "jokers" because you object to there opinions. My apologies if I have misinterpreted your comment.

Kind Regards
Cody
