1951-built Oceanic turns Platinum
« on: October 14, 2009, 07:59:50 PM »
1951-built Oceanic (ex-Independence) (IMO. 5160180), in lay-up since 2001, is due for beaching at Alang in the near future.
Her speculated last name might be Platinum II...

Best regards,
Jens

Picked up the following from Shipping News Clippings today:

Rescue operations to salvage the ghost passenger ship Platinum II and tug Barakhoda continued for the second day on Wednesday. Gujarat Maritime Board (GMB) officials maintained that the nine crewmembers on board the tug are safe.

Hi Robert,

thanks for the info.
I lost track of her when she left San Francisco last year and when I posted this news ISR still listed her as "Oceanic" and laid-up.
I didn't know she already had arrived at Alang...:-(

Looks like she might have the same problems as the "Blue Lady".

Regards,
Jens

Thanks for these daily updates, very interesting, indeed!

Btw... I hardly know anything about a ship's construction. Where might those radioactive substances come from? Any idea someone?

Best regards,
Jens

She is in BIG trouble and probably wont be allowed to beach at Alang, as there is a huge row regarding the Asbestos waste aboard.

Platinum II is listing and grounded off Gopnath, around 30 to 40 nautical miles from Alang. She physically can no longer be beached at Alang due to this predicament. Plans are afoot to break her up in situ and it understood that a local breaker has offered $125/ldt for the priviledge, reflecting the difficult nature of demolishing her as lies. Permission for dismantling has been granted by the GMB on the basis of wreck removal, rather than ship recycling. As always, the hazardous material allegations were over stated by environmentalists. The most recent controversy is the the fact that the ship arrived with false registry documents.

Brgds
