Oceana Trip 18-25th July-Norway.
« on: August 01, 2009, 03:44:46 PM »
Whilst on this cruise, (& somewhere in the North Sea ), on 19th July, we had to change course for a helivac of a sick man from the deck aft. After 1.1/4 hrs.an RAF helicopter appeared astern, and during the course of the next 40 minutes placed a paramedic aboard, then in due course it airlifted a patient for treatment in U.K.-Does anyone know where it came from?  (My guess is Leaconfield or Boulmer). Later on 22nd July, we landed at Geiranger a man who was airlifted by a Norwegian helicopter. (Hopefully photos. of the former to follow).

Hi Stoneleigh,

I dont know the first thing about helicopters, but did it have a registration number on or somthing like that? It might help track down where it flew from...

Thanks, coatham,  It looks like it had XZ 595 with a large 'K'  visible.(Possibly a SeaKing)?  Regards, Stoneleigh

Hi Stoneliegh,

It was a Seaking, but ive still no idea where from. Ive e-mailed a friend who is a aviation 'buff', to see if he can figure it out.

If it was XZ598 it was definitely from RAF Boulmer in Northumberland - see photograph @ http://www.trawlerpictures.net/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=6752

I have just looked carefully at my photos., and I am certain it was XZ 595 I have seen several yellow S.& R.Sea Kings but this one has a large 'K' on tail; section & which the others did not have. (I wondered if the K was its flight allocation?)

According to http://www.bmal.org.uk/seaking.htm - ZX595 is attached to 202 Squadron and is based at Leconfield.

Thanks for that information, I thought it might be either Leaconfield or Boulmer. We were approaching the Dogger Bank area at the time, but we  changed course, and were heading N.W direction I believe. After the evacuation completed, we headed N,E. to pick-up our intended course. The vessels course (shown on a the screen in our cabin), displayed a large triangular blip, on what until then, had been a straight line.        Thanks again.
