head-on collision near Tokyo
« on: July 09, 2009, 11:58:09 AM »
The 7,100-dwt ThaiLine 2 (built 1991) was involved in the head-on smash with the 200-gt cargoship Yawata Maru No 8 (built 1990) near Oshima island south of Tokyo on Tuesday.

Yawata Maru, owned by Fuyo Kaiun, was heading towards Kasawaki, while the other vessel was heading west to Kobe with 20 crew.

According to the Japan Coastguard, ThaiLine2, owned by ThaiLine of Malaysia, has sustained damage to its bow and has taken on water.

Initially it was able to proceed under its own power but its condition worsened and it is now being towed by a Fukuda Salvage tug.

Yawata Maru is making its own way to the port of Shimoda. No injuries or pollution resulted from the collision, which is under investigation.
