Spanish Ship Sinks off Newfoundland, All Survive
« on: February 22, 2009, 06:12:19 PM »
A spokesperson with the Coast Guard Search and Rescue in Halifax says all of the 22 crew members of a Spanish fishing trawler are alive after their vessel sank 400 km east of St. John's earlier today. Spokesperson Geri Grychowski says the vessel sank about 10:30 this morning. She says the crew of the 30-metre Monte Galineiro jumped into life-rafts or into the ocean after the vessel caught fire this morning. The coast guard vessel Leonard J. Cowley happened to be only 10 minutes away when it received the trawler's distress signal and were on scene almost immediately. Grychowski says a Hecules aircraft and Cormorant Helicopter from 9 Wing Gander assisted in the search, as well as a Provincial Airlines flight. One crew member was treated for hypothermia. Grychowski says she's not able to say when they will arrive back to shore but that the individual with hypothermia was not airlifted to hospital.

Not yet in the Spanish newspapers, many thanks. Pictures of the vessel, in better days, can be seen here

News reports this morning say that the Leonard J. Cowley was following the trawler in hopes of inspecting it, so there was not much distance between the two vessels. Still, it's very fortunate that nobody was hurt in the sinking, as the water was pretty cold and the boat sank quickly.

Allan

Thanks for the VOCM link. The boat is going to be searched now because it was a very suspicious sinking and they might have been hiding something on their vessel.
