Whilst I hate to see such a vessel go to the scrapyard, one should not forget the enormous expenditure when trying to save her. The s.s. "Rotterdam" (built 1959 for 57 mln. euros) was saved from the scrapyard and permanently berthed in Rotterdam at a cost of 200 mln. euros. Main problem: the very strict rules about disposal of the asbestos which is widely used as insulation on older vessels. The restoration is still not complete and another controversy has arisen, making her future still uncertain. Keeping my fingers crossed ..... :-o

Hi Robert,

I agree with you. And as Hamburg's government just announced it will spend 3 Billion Euros to save a bank I don't think that there's much money left for Maxim.
As I see it it's too late anyway.
Maritime Matters reports that Maxim is scheduled to be beached today:-(:-(:-(

Yes, it is confirmed.
She was beached at Alang on February, 26, in the early morning.

Incidentally there's a movie on German tv tonight, February, 27, where she's starring as "Britannic". The movie's called "Juggernaut", a thriller, (German title "18 Stunden bis zur Ewigkeit") produced in 1974.
There are some nice views of her sailing, including some aerial views.
The movie's on WDR at 23.15.

I have just discovered that she had been renamed Maxim M at some point before being beached.

You snooze, you lose... I know what I'm talking about:-(. At least I managed to see her in drydock during her very last annual overhaul at Blohm & Voss in 2007.

What a sad, sad sight! Would have loved to see her moored permanently here at Hamburg...

Kjipe greier Thomas. Har sett Maximen flere ganger fra hytta utenfor Bergen. Alltid en favoritt. Synd med slike sjebner.

Hi David,

thanks for the update.
Sometimes I'm quite thankful that photos of ships at Alang are scarce.
A sad sight to see her bow cut off. :-(
