And I agree with you, Ferry-Man.
But saving them and turning them into museum ships or floating hotels or whatever isn't cheap either. If Queen Mary in Long Beach would no longer be profitable I think she'd sooner or later see the torch, too. Even as a museum they have to be profitable...

And I'm also wondering how to evacuate one of these mega-cruisers in case of an emergency. 500 people panicking, not nice, but 5000? :-?
Besides, i woudn't want to spend my holiday in a floating hotel with 5000 guests.

Hello Ferry-Man

What is the point of saving something to butcher it.   I wish the dear old QE2 could have been broken up rather than suffer the indignities and abuse she is going to be subjected to.   I trust when she is being towed to Bremerhaven to be lengthened she will have the grace to sink in the Bay of Biscay and leave us simply with fond memories of how she used to be.   At least the Yanks didn't butcher the QM.   The QE2 is going to end up looking like a large edition of some of these old ferries that have been subjected to lengthening, heightening and other abuse - again profit over aesthetics.

Sad but true, Allan...
But let's agree she's sinking on her way back from Bremerhaven to Dubai because on arrival in Bremerhaven I might have my last chance to see her in her "old" condition with my own eyes. I've only ever seen her on photos...

Hi Jens,
I hate these 5.000 passenger vessels. There are more people on board as in teh village, Kipfenberg, where I live. Image, what you have to wait to leave the ship for an excursion, an as well, what happens in danger. Someone should limit the size fo the big menboxes.
By the way go on cruise with the Discovery this year, a still old fashioned, 1972 built ship with only 500 people on board.

I must admit, I am not a friend of converting ships into a hotel or another "venture". A ship is a ship, as long as it sails. After that, it becomes a hotel, a shopping-center, a museum, whatever, but not a ship. Of course there are different examples as well, like Hamburg's "Cap San Diego".

One thing, I usually prefer newbuilds above any of the old stuff, but I think in case of the cruiseships we are not only loosing just some old ships, but we are loosing cruiseships with a certain style. I have seen many photos of these ships' interior and they do look like SHIPS where you can have a relaxing sea-voyage, some amenities and good food, but as well alot of deck-space (best a wooden deck of course) and you were reminded everywhere that you are onboard a ship. Not a huge shopping-mall, a casino or a huge hotel. I am not interested in entertainment, as well I'd not do fancy dress, but I would for sure enjoy a voyage across the sea in style !  :-D
If I see the interior pictures of modern cruiseships, these do not remind me in ships anymore and my mood for trying any of these ships for a trip was gone. That's why I think, we do loose something. The other thing what I can hope for, although I think it's pretty hopeless is, that a medium sized cruiseship could be built, with all these classic features, and nice old-fashioned plush interior :-) No glitter and show-off, plese but cosiness instead.
Here is the link to a website, a German woman who is a dedicated fan of the "Maxim Gorkiy" has created it !! http://www.schiffe-maxim.de/Maxim2.htm

I wonder where she is going...

About a week ago German TV reported that some people here at Hamburg were trying to raise funds to buy her and bring her back to Hamburg as a hotel or museum or something.
But so far there have been no news if they're succeeding or not. Looks like they did not...

it was reported that they do have the money to buy the ship, but no berth for her in Hamburg. The whole story is pretty much similar to that of finnjet, even  Maxim Gorkiy beeing a Gas-Turbine Ship.

Hello Kai,

can't decide whether that's good or bad news...
One should think, though, that the Port of Hamburg is big enough. :-x

Jens

Latest news on Maxim:

On January, 29, she called at Limassol to have some of her key fittings removed.
On January, 30, she left Limassol and is now said to be anchored off Port Said, awaiting transit of the Suez Canal... Destination: Alang.
There are still negotiations going on, though, to find her a permanent berth at Hamburg. See MARITIME MATTERS

Regards,
Jens

Just found this nice video online, where you can see the ship's rather nostalgic looking interior (but that's the way to go, when travelling by ship, I think :-) )

I found a website today with the latest news on her: http://hotelschiffhamburg.de/abschliessende-verhandlungen/

Apparently, there are still talks about Maxim Gorkiy coming to Hamburg and final negotiations between the Senate and Investors are taking place today. Also there is an option to buy the ship which runs out today. The city is offering a berth on Kirchenpauerkai, which would not be accessible by the public until 2015. But maybe a temporary berth until then can be found.

Meanwhile the ship is in the Red Sea, less than a week away from India.

More news forthcoming.

Regards

Kai

for all of you out there with crossed fingers: Talks by the investors with the City of Hamburg have so far not been successful. The Hamburg Government is in favour of finding a solution, but the Hamburg Port Authority has not been constructive. In consequence, the original investors have dediced not to pursue the project.

The promotors are now trying to find other investors but the future of the ship looks bleak. Maxim Gorkiy is at anchor in front of Alang, but still in the possesion of a trader, so far not handed over to the breakers yard.

Further news forthcoming.

Regards,

Kai
