That is really sad news, she was such an interesting vessel with that infamous funnel. Will be sad to see her go, specially since I have not personally seen her  :-(

Maybe someone could save her last minute...

Unfortunately, there is little chance of her finding a trading buyer. She does not meet the new SOLAS requirements due to come into force next year and upgrading to that standard would be prohibitive.

As an aside, it is estimated that around 30 "classic" cruise ships will have to be scrapped this year because of the new regulations. Also on the list is the 94 year old DOULOS which has been refused an exemption despite not officially being a 'cruise' ship.

I have seen it a few times in Northen Europe, and I have as well seen various photos of it's interior and read voyage reports. This ship would have been MY choice to do a cruise on. This one, or one of the other classic cruiseships.

Now, where does that lead ? Lot of cruiseships that do have a very ship-alike interior and a ship-feelling amonst them, will be scrapped. The only option is then, floating shopping centers and amusement parks with casinos ? This is very sad as that would never be my choice for an informal voyage across the seas.

Hi,
very sad news, another real cruise ships for the breakers. Luckily I have seen her several times.
Another candidate for the breakers is the 66 built Mona Lisa, forme Kungsholm, but lately in a newspaper I saw an ad for a Fjord cruise in summer 2009.
Regards
Gerolf

What is in the new SOLAS 2010 regulations that means death to most of the older, nicer looking Cruise Ships; Maxim Gorky, Mona Lisa, Saga Rose/Ruby, and I am sure even QE2 are having to go?

At a quick glance, the biggest thing to effect the older cruise ships is not the sprinkler systems, but the rule that as of 2010, 85% of materials used must be non flammable (to a point).
If that's the case, as someone said on another message board, it would mean stripping a lot of the older ships to the bare steel and starting over.

This is what I found on SOLAS 2010,hope it helps

Thanks for the info, such a shame that one small rule means the loss of so many Nice cruise ships.

Thanks,

As a fan of these old cruise liners I'm really devastated with Phil's message. 30 of them might be sold for scrap this year... and not even an exemption for the lovely Doulos :-(
Well, with SOLAS 2010 casting its shadows this was foreseeable, but I was still hoping...
At least I could have a look at Maxim Gorkiy and Saga Rose in Blohm & Voss drydock here at Hamburg, though I would have loved to see them sailing even only once.

Regards,
Jens

Besides the non-flammable materials requirement, there are at least two others that make upgrading many old ships prohibitive.  After 2010, passenger ships must have at least two completely independent propulsion systems and two-compartment survivability, so if any two compartments are flooded the ship will stay afloat.

Doulos is full of flammable wood, single engine, and has only one compartment survivability.  If the only issue was flammable materials, Operation Mobilization, the owner, would probably keep her, especially since they are still busy with the replacement for the Logos II, their other ship.

Well, I will not question the necessity of SOLAS 2010. If I were to sail on Doulos or any other of those golden "oldies" and she'd catch fire and start sinking the last thing on my mind would be her loveliness or rich history... that's understood!
But when it comes to the point of scrapping them I must admit I can't be rational.
In that case I'm a hopeless nostalgic :-)

I agree, it is a shame that so many ships will have to be scrapped. I have often wondered, with these Extreme-size cruise ships, how would 5000 people evacuate a ship the Size of Freedom of the Seas in an emergency?

Can't some more ships be saved and turned into other ventures, like the QE2?
