German Shipping gazettes reporting today (Oct.14,2005) about rumours that obviously MAERSK has ordered the first "giant" with a nominal intake of 13.460 TEU at their own Odense Shipyard. This should be treated carefully, as no official confirmation available time being.

Do our Danish members know more ?
dead slow ahead !  :-)
best regards, Klaus

I suppose the most relevant way of measuring the size of containerships for the future may be the deadweight tonnage, since M

Dear all,

found below mentioned hint in "Dyna Liners" # 42/2005, dated Oct. 21, 2005 :

"More details emerge on the assumed Maersk-Sealand 13.460 TEU super-leviathan under construction at Odense: 400 metre length-over-all, width 56 metres, draft 16 metres, 175.000 dwt (instead of 125.000), one single srew 80mW (106.000 hp)main engine, 25 knots."

Wow !
dead slow ahead !  :-)
best regards, Klaus

400m loa @175,000t dwt 56m beam and is going to be pushed at 25knts by one screw with a cargo lets say around 10,000 containers by the time you throw in half height and forty foot boxes also.

Apart from that being a very BIG SHIP that is going to have to be one heck of an all mighty big power plant to run it.

It will be intresting to see her when complete.

I doubt I will ever get to see it down here in Hobart, although our container berth has the depth.  We don't even have a regular overseas service anymore. We used to occasionaly get the New Zealand Pacific come in may be once every 2 years.  But even though she is history we don't even get any overseas container vessels drop by.

I guess I can only wish, Hobart is the only port in Tasmania that could accomodate her.

The other thing is also although we know maersk are building and apparentley ahead of the field how do we know that one of the compeditors is not planing also but keeping details quiet.

Hi glenn,

Suspect it is almost impossible to keep details quiet unless you own the shipyard, which is the case for Maersk regarding Odense. I remember reading an article in Lloyds List about the delivery of Svenborg Maersk which was much bigger that the serie initiated by Regina Maersk. Market discovered with much suprise that a larger vessel had been delivered keeping competion behind for at least 2 years.

INCAT Down here is pretty good at keeping things quiet.  But they can no longer deny that they are building a vessel when you can quite clearly see it in the sheds.
