Hi FWE

I do not think Hoegh Asia is laid up, she left Southampton at 16:12 on 20th bound for Santander, having arrived at Soton, from Le Havre at 07:12 the same morning.   Guess she was calling for repairs/bunkers

Current summary at 21/12 of laid-up ships on East and South Coast of UK (others laid-by in Lyme Bay and Falmouth Bay etc) appears to be  River Tyne Nil River Tees

Any more apart from some smaller craft ?
The Finnish icebreaker/multipurpose offshore vessel BOTNICA is currently laid up at Leith. The somewhat larger ones FENNICA & NORDICA are laid up at Arendal, Norway (see photos by ghazten), but think they are heading for drydock in January and possible for icebreaking duties afterwards if it gets enough cold in Finland.

Singapore could be the place to visit soon. They are preparing to receive up to 40 containerships for lay-up over the next few months as the majors start returning chartered tonnage to owners, with no prospect of immediate work for these vessels. Majors, such as Maersk, are intending to operate with their own vessels on much reduced schedules, until things get better. Even so, Maersk have indicated that they may also lay-up some of their owned vessels, perhaps for a month at a time on a rolling basis, to take capacity out of the market, but have it available if there is any increase in volumes or rates.

MSC are in a slightly better position than some, as they operate some older tonnage, and these vessels could be scrapped rather than laid up, realising cash instead of costing money.

China is still predicted to take 40m more tonnes of iron ore in 2009 than 2008 so there's a bit of hope for the bulker market.

Does METHANIA count as laid up? Methania is the largest and apparently oldest ship on the Belgian register, and for some reason is on Greenpeace's list of ships to watch, probably because they think she is in danger of imminent scrapping. She spent most of the summer moored off Falmouth, before being recalled to Zebrugge, and reloaded with LNG. This was, according to the Times newspaper, intended to be part of a bizarre trade, where gas imported from the Gulf to Europe, is subsequently re-exported to places as far afield as India. It seems that this trade has gone sour, and poor Methania is once again moored off Falmouth for several weeks, only this time fully loaded.

Re: Laid Up Ships - Antic

Although once in the Lapthorn fleet as the Hoo Plover the Antic is currently laid up at Hull Docks following her exit from Dry Dopcking back in the autumn.

She looks clean and tidy but has not traded since September 2009.

On the topic of Coastalbulk Shipping the Christine Y is currently on the Tees but due to sail to Leith.

Methania is not the only gas carrier 'resting' of the Cornish Coast.
The EXCELSIOR (2005/93719. EXCELSIOR NV also of Belgium) is anchored off Porthleven, west of the Lizard, she has also been off the coast previously in the year. (She appears on the Lands End AIS)

I note that METHANIA is laden ie being used for storage and ask if it is clear if EXCELSIOR is also laden ?. I note that oil majors have recently fixed VLCCs for storage to be anchored in the North Sea and wondered if the same for LNG ?

It seems if this trend continues we will soon have more crude oil and natural gas floating on top of the North Sea in storage on ships than we have underneath it !

The Falmouth ship movements site (http://www.falmouthport.co.uk/commercial/html/movement.php) shows that the Pietri Glory moved up the Fal to lay up yesterday, with the Autoline going up today, I will check tomorrow, and advise. The Palma (1983/27589; Ph) has been anchored far out in Falmouth Bay for some weeks now, she was down as going up the Fal when she first arrived, but must be hoping for work! Julian

Not sure about EXCELSIOR, I think she is laden. Earlier in the week the BP LNG British Trader (2002/93498) was in the Bay for bunkers, she arrived from the Isle of Grain, and sailed for Port of Spain, Trinidad, so at least she seems to be trading, and has a Red Ensign!

CALA PONENTE IMO: 9232656 due Blyth on the 27th December. I may be totally wrong here but as far as i'm aware this size container vessel does not normally call at Blyth, so I would assume she is in for Lay-up.

Can anyone more familiar with Blyth confirm this?
