News of Coastal Bulk's decision to cease trading is spreading (former Lapthorn's). Appears their fleet are heading to moorings in Thames and Medway. Notice already on moorings in the Thames, Ardent and Martin at Woolwich, Lark, Swallow and Falcon at Erith, and on the Medway at Gillingham Pier is Fulmar, Swift is in Chatham dock.

It seems they have been failed by a Government which has not fully supported a greater use of the environmentally friendly water option for transportation of freight. It is a sad day when such a long established company stops trading and it can only be hoped that the fleet will remain trading around the coast if sold.

Hi FWE
Not surprising really, this useless government is only interested in saving the banks that have screwed up everything and everybody.

Phil,
The bulk market is dead! Sign of the times I guess. Understand that Zodiac have already laid up 8 capesize bulkers - 5 at Johore and three in Southampton including the WATERFORD on 101 berth. Chris Allport

Im not sure if this one is laid up or not. The 'Investigator' (8020795) is currently docked in Hartlepool and is not due to depart until the 31/01/2009. Here operation is stated as 'Lay-by' which is what the two Tees layups also have down. You can see whats berthed on the Tees by clicking, here.Does anyone know if this vessel is laid up? Kind Regards

It is possible it may soon be swinging back the other way. It was recently reported that the Chinese have resumed iron ore imports and last week both Rio Tinto and BHP chartered 11 Capesize bulkers each. Meanwhile there has been a couple more charters for Brazilian iron ore for China. Who knows, it may soon buck up again.

I am wondering if the vehicle carrier Sierra Nevada Highway is joining the list. At the moment, she is at anchor in the Nab anchorage, showing the Nab as destination and she is not on the Southampton VTS movements schedules. I don't think I have ever seen a vehicle carrier at the anchorages in this area before; they usually run a pretty tight "in and out as quick as you like" schedule here.

Old reefer PIETARI GLORY heading for the River Fal. Sounds like a layup to me, but most of the others arriving recently at Falmouth have subsequently 'escaped'. David
