Fowairet in trouble at Westerschelde in Holland
« on: September 20, 2005, 10:52:05 AM »
At the Westerschelde in Holland the Fowairet (containership) is grounding. She got containers with dangerous goods on board.
At this point there is a very big chance she good break in parts.
The crew has been taken from the ship. And the coastguard waiting on what ever is going to happen.

The 270 mtr long Fowairet ran aground at Perkpolder (Western Scheldt) NL 05.15 local time at high tide.
On board are at least 147 containers with flamable, toxic and/or  other hazardous goods.
The crew has left the ship, because she seems to break in two, due the comming low tide. She had a Belgian pilot on board

I photographed her 12-07-2005 at Antwerp, to wich she was going today too, comming from London.

Spectators had to leave the surrounding area, because of the danger and several ships are arriving to start the salvage of the total of 1900 containers, fuel and to stabilize the vessel.
18:00h local time, 16 tugs managed to tow her back to deeper water without breaking her.
The Fowairet is being towed to Flushing for inspections.

Fowairet is moored in Flushing Harbour for inspections.
Ron van de Velde took some (5) great close-ups of her.

Does anybody know WHY Fowairet ran aground inspite of having a Pilot on board?

Steering Failure? Engine Failure? or Human error?

Cheers

Fowairet is layed up in Flushing "Sloehaven", a few kilometer east of the city of Flushing. She is or will be drydocked at that location. I do not know if she is allready unloaded and still in sight for public.

The latest new on Fowairet.

Containervessel Fowairet left Flushing harbour the 6th of October.
With permission of the Dutch Shipping Inspection, the vessel is towed by tugs of Multraship and URS to Rotterdam for repairs.

Forwarait ran aground the 20th of september at Perkpolder (Western Scheldt). Her hull is seriously damaged, by almost breaking due the comming low tide.
Multraship and URS salvaged her and towed her to Flushing, where the majority of her 1900 containers, of wich some of them  contained hazardous goods,  were unloaded and some indispensable repairs were carried out.
