Grounding of the Fedra in Gibraltar
« on: October 10, 2008, 06:57:30 PM »
Yet another grounding in Gibraltar this evening. This afternoon the 35886gt, 1984 built bulk carrier FEDRA (IMO 8208713) lost engine power and started drifting toward the coast on the east side of Gibraltar. Tugs deployed to the area and when i saw her about 0.5 nm from the coast they seemed to have her under control. Unfortunately the stormy weather has worsened and the ship drifted stern first onto the cliffs just below the lighthouse at Europa point and then swerved alongside the cliffs. 30 crew members are still onboard and efforts are underway tonight to take them off the ship.

Not of the actual grounding as this happened this evening. I have some pics when she was 0.5nm from the coast.

PS Just heard that a spanish rescue helicopter is on the scene to rescue the crewmen.

Hi Daniel,

Thanks. I really need a photo of the vessel where it is now. Any ideas who might have one? I need it to send to Five Oceans Salvage who we act for and are arriving tomorrow to asses the situation.

Thanks.

My God, this is my Danish build great love of all, build by Burmeister & Wain in Copenhagen Denmark in 1984, Has been following this vessel for 8 years now since she was here in my port of Fredericia and i was on a great visit onboard.
Please let me now what is going on with her my friends in and around Gibraltar.
Hope she will live tomorrow and some great big tugs can help her off  the ground. Im almost crying right now, Why my Bulker why.
All the best wishes for her.

Weather not good at allrigt now, so shes taking a right beating. You can see how much damage she has sustained and that photo was taken only an hour after she grounded!

Bad news guys.

The worst has occurred. She has broken in two under the severe conditions. The last crew member was airlifted shortly after she broke.

She had just bunkered so she is carrying 1000 tonnes of fueloil. All efforts are currently going into containing the fue onboard under the severe weather.
