QE2 For Tyne
« on: October 02, 2008, 07:09:37 PM »
Latest arrival time in the Tyne for the QE2 is now estimated at 06.00 Wednesday morning 8th October 2008.
However watch this space as High water is not until 09.36 so it may change but sounds about right if she 'swings first' before going along side as before at Northumberland Quay.
She is estimated to sail at 22.00 (high water) same day, might make a nice night shot for you keen photographers if weather is good!

Hi Mike, I heard there was going to be a big fireworks display when she sails, this is the last British port she will ever enter before she enters Southampton for the last time ever!! :-(

then she is off to Dubai to get sandblasted by nature!

i would hate to have the job of keeping her hull and superstructure in pristine condition.

Hi,

Can you tell me where will be the best viewpoint to see her alongside and also sail. I've just moved from Southampton to Ashington so would be a mighty shame not to see her one last time! I'm not familiar yet with the Tyne at all though so advice would be appeciated!

Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan

To see her alongside - take a trip over to South Shields on the cross Tyne Ferry and you will be able to get a fine view of the QE2 - the ferry more or less goes alongside her.
For her departure - somewhere like Clifford's Fort at Tynemouth and you will be able to see her sail through the piers and out to sea.
If you need directions, just ask  :-)

And to Mike - night time photography of a ship moving is never going to happen (unfortunately).

Thanks Steve, I think I should be able to find those places no problem! Just hope the weather is fine and I get the oppurtunity to see her in daylight!

Hi Dan

Well I've just taken a look at the BBC 5 Day Weather  Forecast and Tuesday (7th) is showing up as a sunny day, so lets hop that continues into the 8th  :-)

Here is a link to the Port of Tyne Authority web site which will give you an idea of vantage points - they have put up a map for the QE2 visit.

Hi Mike

I see the EST has moved to 07:00 - at least it is moving towards a time when there is more lighting for photography, now if they could just nudge it towards 10.00 and I'll catch her inbound from the Island Escape vessel

Hi,
This is the QE2 s webcam :-

http://www.cunard.co.uk/bridgecam/qe2_cam1.asp

It is on 24/7
http://easytide.ukho.gov.uk/EasyTide/EasyTide/ShowPrediction.aspx?PortID=0203&PredictionLength=7

High tide is 9.47 on Wednesday morning- maybe there are bringing her in early so that they can have the opportunity to have a couple of attempts , if it is anything like last time:)

Hi Wobbly

Yes good viewing point - however if she comes in at the expected 07.00 then there won't be sufficient light for photography   :-?

Hi All

I see that Nexus are to run 'special' trios to see the QE2 on her berth at the Northumbria Quay - this from their web site @ http://tinyurl.com/43vfu6

'Nexus is to run special Shields Ferry tours for people to view the QE2 on the Tyne
Story added: Friday 03 October 2008

Nexus is to run special trips on the Shields ferry for people to view the QE2 when she arrives on the Tyne on Wednesday, October 8.

The half hour trips will give people the chance to get up close to the QE2 from the unique perspective of the river while she is berthed at the Northumbrian Quay in North Shields.

Nexus, who operate the Shields ferry service, will run the trips from 12pm (Noon) on Wednesday, October 8, with the last sailing at 10pm.

The newest Shields ferry, Spirit of the Tyne, will be used for the trips while the other ferry, Pride of the Tyne, will be used for the regular timetabled river crossings.

The trips will be departing every two hours from South Shields ferry landing and the landing at Royal Quays  Marina  on North Tyneside. The trips from South Shields will get underway at 12pm while the trips from Royal Quays  Marina  start from 1pm.

Passengers do not need to pre-book a trip. Tickets, priced

I am not 100% sure but according to what I hear the firework display will be at Northumberland Quay as the QE2 leaves, just in case you guys are 'in the wrong place at the wrong time!
