Its high time that decisive action us taken against these pirates. They have no regard for international law so why should we have any regard for their rights. Until action is taken this problem will increase.

Russia sends warship to counter Somalia piracy

Russia on Friday sent a warship to Somalia to  counter piracy, after a cargo ship with tanks and  Russian sailors on board was seized off the lawless African nation.
The reason for the deployment was "the activisation of pirate attacks,  including against Russian citizens,"

Hi Steve,

They probably use some kind of gas. And as usually they forget to check the information leaflet to see how much you need.
Have fun

Hi Klaus-Peter

I've just heard on the BBC News that a US Warship has caught up with the hijacked ship and is 'monitoring' the situation. Evidently the US Ship will only take action if the hijacked ship moves towards a Port.

Hi All

I see that in addition to the one crew member (Captain?) who died there have been further fatalities within the hijackers - this courtesy of China News @ http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-09/30/content_10135582.htm

'NAIROBI, Sept. 30 (Xinhua) --

Three Somali pirates have died in a shootout following the differences over what to do with the seized Ukrainian ship with crew members, arms and tanks aboard, a regional maritime official confirmed on Tuesday.

Andrew Mwangura of the East Africa's Seafarers Assistance Program said the three died on Monday night as they were guarding the MV Faina over the misunderstanding on whether to release the arms cargo that included 33 T-72 tanks and 20 crew members.

"A misunderstanding erupted between the moderate and radical pirates aboard the ship prompting a shootout that left three of them dead," Mwangura told Xinhua by telephone.

"The moderates want to give in but the radicals don't want this to happen. The U.S. naval ships are very close and there is panic among the pirates," said Mwangura.

The incident came as warships surrounded the MV Faina which was seized on Thursday, with its 21 Ukrainian, Russian and Lithuanian crew members and arms cargo.

"For the safety of the crew members, we urge the United States and Russian naval ships to pull back and stay away from the ship," Mwangura said.

The MV Faina is owned and operated by Kaalbye Shipping Ukraine, and its crew include citizens of Ukraine, Russia and Latvia.

U.S. officials said the ship was reported being surrounded by three small boats of pirates while sailing 250 miles (400 km) off the coast of Somalia.

The latest hijackings are part of a surge of daring maritime attacks off the coast of Somalia, a war-torn country that has been without a functioning government since 1991.

The authorities in Somalia said they were powerless to confront the pirates, who regularly hold ships for ransom at the port of Eyl.

There were reports that at least 100 pirates from the dreaded Somalia Youth Coast Guard were in control of the MV Faina, which is sailing under a Belize flag.

Pirates have seized dozens of ships near Somalia's coast in recent months.'

Found in Fairplay today following info

AST African seafaring official has been charged by Kenya with issuing alarming statements regarding the hijacked Ukrainian cargo ship Faina and possession of cannabis.
Andrew Mwangura, who heads Mombasa's Seafarers Assistance Programme, was arrested yesterday in response to statements he made regarding the intended destination of Faina's munitions cargo.
Mwangura was also accused of possessing cannabis.
He has denied both charges and his case will be heard on 30 October.
Officials claimed that his statements could cause alarm among the general public.
Kenyan officials vehemently denied the cargo was on its way to southern Sudan, a claim repeated by US Navy insiders and various media outlets.

I am not sure but I think Mr.Mwangura gave us a lot of info about the things which are going on down there. Most properly and I am for sure not alone in my thoughts this is a political thing, poor guy seemsAfrica had to take a lot of steps to come up to a normal way to handle such matters.

Beste wishes to Mr. Mwangura

after one week absent from this site,i'm not really surprised to read all this stuff.Mr. Mwangura probably knew to much about the dirty business in the east african region.that the pirates hijacked this roro vessel with tanks as cargo,is without any doubt an intended action.
