Update on the adrift Antalina in Hurricane Ike
« on: September 12, 2008, 05:35:30 PM »
Update, 11pm EDST.  The US Coast Guard announced a tug has been dispatched to tow the Antalina and should arrive at the drifting ship about noon, CDST(Texas time) on Saturday.  The Coast Guard further said that the Antalna had weathered the worst of the storm and conditions should slowly start to improve as Hurricane Ike makes landfall.

Update: 7pm EDST Sept 12: The U.S. Coast Guard web site reported that USCG and US Air Force rescue helicopters were unable to rescue the 22 member crew of the Antalina due to 80 knot winds and they landed at Lake Charles, Louisiana away from the brunt of the storm.. Seas were reported at 20 feet.  The vessel was overflown by a HU-25 Falcon rescue jet.  The report stated that the Coast Guard maintained contact with the ship which had left Port Arthur, Texas seeking safe haven from the exceptionally large Hurricane Ike which covers a good portion of the western and northwestern Gulf of Mexico.  The ship became disabled when it lost propulsion and was drifting southwest away from the coast.  The ship was unable to steer and make way.  It is going to be a long night for the crew.   Maximum sustained winds in Hurricane Ike were last reported at 105 mph with hurricane strength winds extending out 115 miles from the center of the storm.

Original Post: Yahoo news (www.yahoo.com) is reporting at noon, EDST,Friday, Sept 12, that an unidentified 584 foot freighter loaded with petroleum coke has become disabled 90 miles southeast of Galveston, Texas in the Hurricane Ike.  The freighter has a crew of 22.  The Coast Guard initially declined a helicopter rescue siting the 105mph sustained winds of Hurricane Ike and forecasts of 50 foot waves.  The Coast Guard later rescinded the no go order and is currently trying to rescue the crew members.  The center of Hurricane Ike is expected to make landfall near Galveston late Friday night.  If that freighter were to be blown on shore it would be a spectacular site given the forecasted 20 foot storm surge along the Texas shore.  The center of Hurricane Ike may move right up Galveston Bay to Houston causing havoc with one of the larger concentrations of chemical and petroleum refining in the U.S. and one of the largest ports in the U.S.

The disabled freighter that was stranded 100 miles off the coast of Galveston during Hurricane Ike is now operating under its own power.

The 484-foot Antalina was was forced to ride out the storm after it broke down in the Gulf of Mexico, and its 22 crewmembers made it safely through the hurricane.

Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. Shawn Decker said Sunday that the Antalina, a Cyprus-flagged cargo freighter, had power but was still being escorted by tugboats.

Darrell Wilson, a spokesman for Greece-based TEO Shipping, which owns the ship, said the Antalina will drop anchor somewhere off the Texas coast and offload its cargo of petroleum coke.
