Hi NLHOBDAY,
Just received this info off a pal that works at the port, so I suppose I am answering my own question???? :-?

"They are Gottwald (German) 100 tonne grab cranes for use on coal, scrap or slabs etc. The Port expects to import over 2 million tonnes of coal this year. They can be converted for use on containers if required. They are on fixed pivots on a rail line unlike the Leibherr Mobile cranes which can move anywhere in the dock area.

I am not sure of their exact price but it is a couple of million pounds EACH.

I believe that they are 36 metres high to the cab and the jib is a further 55 metres and capable of spanning 50 metres. I

You never know, if all goes well, the cranes could be there on a perminant bases.
I thought Tyne was mainly passenger etc.

they are definately permanent ,they would not spend a few million pound on them to hire them, also they must have laid railway track for them to move up and down the quay.

Hi NLHOBDAY

this little river north of the Tees is doing not bad,

we have a cracking supply of coal coming in from St petersburg,Riga and some other far flung ports, mainly in the Baltic thou.

The ships are in and out very quick, the ports cranes eat coal for fun,the problem the port has is getting the coal out of the docks. This is done only by train. the problem is they cannot get enough trains to the docks!!!!!!!! it is very similiar to the skys and airline routes!!!!

Today I was working not far away from the docks and between 11am and 4pm there was 4 trains that I heard screaming up the incline out of Tyne Dock .....that equatesto 6000 tons of coal leaving the docks in   5 hours    this means ,I think that there is a hell of a lot of coal comong INTO THE TYNE, you have all heard of the old saying " its like sending coal to Newcastle!!!!!!!!!"

Most of the coal ships agents are" DAN SHIPPING" , so if you look on the Port of Tne website you will see how frequent these ships ,

should I call them COLLIERS !!!  My Grandfather was a skipper on a proper collier , down to the THAMES and back!! I dont Know !!!!

We also get every now and then a rush of scrap ships , at Tyne dock there is a company that has huge reserve s  of scrap metal, when the price is right we get a run of say  2  or 3  bulkers that come in to collect the scrap metal, some are about 40 000 tonnes at least.

Please correct me if I am wrong, I am  only writing from what I have Learned off people

Regards

Cawky
