« Reply #15 on: August 13, 2007, 01:05:43 PM »
Although not on the Tyne, these are the plans for her and the Queen Victoria in Sydney on the 23-25 feb 2008

Queen Victora 23/02 to berth at the Overseas Terminal at Circular Quay

QE2 24/02 to berth at the Garden Island Navy Base in Sydney (I think she is to berth on the inner berths like the QM2 did)

Queen Victoria 24/02 to sea at 1900

QE2 24/02 to move from Garden Island to Circular Quay by Tugs only no use of her propolson at 1930

QE2 25/02 to sea bound for Hobart

Hi Steve,

No draw was held, just the Deputy Harbour master decided he wanted all the glory!!!  As you say though it's a big job.  Getting her around the corner a Brighams may be interesting.

I think she'll be at the piers at 1700 so we may be ok for daylight.

Hi Alan

Rather like the Thompson Spirit in reverse - full halt, tugs pull/push to starboard and full speed ahead

Wasnt sure, the Tyne could handle such a large ship, may not make a good picture though as it will soon be getting dark. I suppose it is worth a trip down!
Might just come. 8-)

Hi Nathan

Well fingers crossed for good weather or we may not see her in the Tyne- by the way she is only going as far as the Tyne Commissioners Quay, which is more or less where the International Ferry Terminal is.

Hi Nathan

What are you trying to say about the skills of the Tyne Tugmen

I would assume that the Tyne Tugs plus perhaps one other from the Tees would be more than capable of assiting the QE2 in?

The QE2 is a baby to some of the ships we have handled on Tyneside, we are short of a few things on Tyneside but tug HP or tug handling skills is not one of them!.

Yer, I read about it a few month ago and I cannot believe how much publicity it is getting all ready, all I can say is if your going to watch it come in be there early there is supposed to be thoosands down at Tynemouth and South Shields! I think she is also coming next year on similar dates too, I think it is her 2 last cruise before she goes to Dubai! I am also on the Queen of Scandinavia when she comes in so I should be able to get a good close up to her before the ferry leaves a 11 for Stavanger but unfortunately I won't be there for her leaving!

Hi Mike

Have you seen the Mull on the river? - per the PTA "Ships on Berth" schedule she is Tyne Dock rather than the Svitzer Wharf?

Hi Steve
Did not see the Mull when I went upriver two weeks ago I do not go upriver to much at present incase I get a plastic bag or rope around the prop as there is a lot of rubbish at present in the river.
I did see 'Fort Austin' waiting to drydock when the cable layer comes out of dock.
Also a 'Page & Moy' cruise ship leaving (not the best looking ship).
The improvements to Royal Quays will be finished later this month when all cruise ships will berth there.
Passing the 'Northern Producer' last night I thought there will be some fun when they have to 'swing' the QE2 to come back downriver, due to the rig they will have to 'Swing' her just before the Nissan terminal which is the widest part.
My guess is they will handle her with 4 local Switzer tugs,by the way take a look at the 'tanker sailing' in 'ships Nostalgia'tonight with minimum 7 'Tyne tugs' maybe more, as I said the QE2 is no big deal in size for the Tyne, mind she is long!.
