Bulkcarrier Taharoa Express slowly righted in Tasman Bay
« on: June 25, 2007, 11:22:57 AM »
The list on the bulk carrier "Taharoa Express" has improved as a ballasting operation continued in Tasman Bay, near Nelson, on June 24.
A load of iron sand slurry on the ship had shifted in rough waters off the coast of Taranaki on June 20, causing the ship to list. "Taharoa Express" slowly proceeded to Tasman Bay. Calmer weather meanwhile has allowed a safety inspector to board the ship, which is slowly levelling. Equipment and pumps are being flown by helicopter from Nelson to help with the operation. A helicopter was also on standy for the crew of 25 in case the situation deteriorated.
The ship in the worst hours had developed a list of 20 degrees to starboard.
It was built at Hyundai, Ulsan in 1990. IMO: 8903117. 138585 dwt, length 259 m, breadth 43 m.

Efforts to right the listing 146,859-dwt bulker Taharoa Express (built 1990) could take longer than originally expected.
Maritime authorities in New Zealand say that it could potentially take up to 10 days to pump excess water out of the ship
Best regards

Just to let you all know. This vessel is back in Tasman Bay to be righted after iron sand moved again while on her way to Australia. Helicopters have been transporting Diggers out to the ship over the last few days. She has now been sorted and on her way again.
