The "kystverket" said no to statoils offer to lend a oilpollution- cleaning vessel "slurpen" yesterday. The worst of it all is that she laid only about 30 minutes from fedje, where the "server" broke in half. I ask myself, and the goverment:
Whats the use with oil-billions when we even cant keep our frontdoor tidy?

Why the hell did the kystverket say no? Here are some pictures of the appalling consequences of this: http://www.naturalbornbirder.com/oeygarden/server_spill.html

It makes me furious to see birds destroyed like this.

The special oilrecovery vessel "Slurpen" is not able to do anything in heavy sea. It's in use today as the weather is calmer.
The heavy weather has made it difficult to do any oilrecovery at all. But as the weather is getting calm, the oilrecovery can speed up.
I guess the responsible persons do what they think is the best way of doing it, always bearing in mind the safety of those people doing the recovery job.

But I am not saying this is the best way of doing it...

Hello Fournier!

I was one of the people in norwegian media who selected your photo of Server for our televition news. We used it a few times before we got live footage from our own camera-crew.

I can tell you that we trawled every french phone book for your phone number to make an agreement for usage. But we only reached another Robert Fournier who didn't exactly understand what we where talking about:)

We also sent you an email to an adress found on this webpage.

We are in a dilemma when we need a photo, and can't reach the photografer. We don't know if he/she want to have his/her name published, so we choose not to credit the photo. But we referred to shipspotting.com.

But if you write to me on [email protected], I can certainly arrange that you'll have a fee paid, or maybe you'd like a dvd-copy of the wreakage or rescue-operation?

Anyway. It was a good photo:)

Hi NB Birder, reading your excellent website, I agree that it is frustrating that the cleaning and rescue of birds gets no funding, only volunteer services.
As a birder myself I can only imagine the frustration you and your fellow volunteers must be feeling. :-(

Today newspaper VG reported that the costs of cleaning up after the "Server" - tragedy will run pretty high. Estimations flare, but it might be as much as the costs with the "rocknes" - disaster. Kystverket, a govermental department estimates that the cleaning of oil will be finished before the summer, and they are working to remove the aft-part of the ship before the autumn-storms.

Last night between 10 and 15 tons of fueloil leaked out of the frontship of the "Server". Reports earlier said that the salvagecompany that handles the... Salvage had control over it. Apparantly not.

I read in the local newspaper that it was more like 30 tons that escaped - overflowing from a tank used to hold oil being pumped from the forward half of the vessel.
