U.S. Navy announces the name of its next aircraft carrier
« on: January 05, 2007, 02:53:40 AM »
The U.S. Navy will name its next aircraft carrier in honor of the United State's 38th president.  Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld said in his eulogy of the recently deceased former President Ford "How fitting it would be that the name Gerald R. Ford will patrol the high seas."  Ford served in the U.A. Navy during World War II.  The Navy will make an official announcement in a few weeks.  Construction of the vessel is scheduled to start next year.

I heard it was going to be the first in a new class of carriers.

The original announcement was made quite some time ago and led  to quite heated debate amongst retired naval officers about the merits of naming vessels after politicians rather than more traditional names such as America, Constellation, Independence, Saratoga, Lexington etc.
