RFA Sir Percivale
« on: August 08, 2006, 05:44:15 AM »
A coulpe of weeks back I posted some pictures of the RFA vessel Sir Percivale in Southampton.
I commented at the time that it seems to be just sitting there, rotting away.
Well, it looks as if it will rot no more. In the Southampton VTS schedules published this morning, it is listed as being moved from the berth in Southampton to Marchwood military port on August 10th and the handling agent is "Babcock Disposal Services".
So, I guess that is another one that will soon be added to the "Scrapped Ships" file.

Hi Kelvin

I am trying to findout from my contacts at Marchwod what is happening to her. She was the last ship i sailed on before i left Marchwood in 1979, i also sailed on the other five LSL's.

Hi Kelvin

Found this interesting reply (26 March 2007) from the MOD to someone who had asked a question about RFA Sir Percivale under the Freedom of Information Act -
http://www.mod.uk/NR/rdonlyres/BE4872C8-E5A3-47AA-A67D-DA539B9C6A88/0/rfa_sir_percival.pdf

'Thank you for your e mail of 21 March requesting information about The RFA Sir Percivale and her sister ships. Your correspondence has been considered to be a
request for information in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act 2000.
The RFA Sir Percivale was first marketed for sale in 2004 and was withdrawn from commercial sale in March 2006 as no suitable purchaser could be found. She is currently berthed at Marchwood Military Port awaiting a final decision on her future, although it is likely that she will be recycled.

Details relating to her sister ships are:
RFA Sir Lancelot was sold in 1989 to a South African company. While the MODdoes not keep records of ships beyond point of sale, we are aware that she wasused as a floating casino in South Africa, before being sold to Singapore in or
around 1992.
RFA Sir Geraint was sold commercially in 2005. She was subsequently re-sold and re-flagged, before eventually being dismantled.
RFA Sir Galahad is currently being marketed to overseas governments, and theMOD is confident that a buyer can be found.
RFA Sir Tristram, although decommissioned, remains in use with the Navy, and is tobe converted for use as a training vessel.
RFA Sir Bedivere remains in service.'

Hi Every one
It looks like The Royal Navy will end up doing RAS with any ships it passes ( fuel from tankers food & drink from passing cruise ships) Providing the pirates havnt nicked them first

She's still at Marchwood today (25th May 2007). Just about make out her pennant number L3036.
Tried to get a photo but was a bit misty today, this is her on the 26th April 2007 in better weather.
