Wood chip carrier Crimson Polaris broke in two
« on: August 12, 2021, 08:20:46 AM »
The Japan Coast Guard successfully evacuated the crew of the 'Crimson Polaris' on Aug 11 without incident and initially reported that the vessel, which had encountered a steering problem, was not in danger. The Japan Coast Guard received a distress call from the vessel at around 7:50 a.m.LT.  Shortly after 2:00 p.m., they began an airlift by helicopter lasting approximately five hours to ferry the 21 crew to shore. Some cargo had leaked from the vessel due to damage to the hull.
At 4:15 a.m. on Aug 12 the 'Crimson Polaris' broke in two just forward of the deckhouse approximately 2.5 miles off the coast. An undetermined amount of oil has reportedly spilled with an investigation and containment efforts underway.

An interesting read from the Maritime Executive. What is odd from the photograph, is seeing the stern section almost upended but with all the lights still on ! What do you think will happen to the rest of the vessel if it doesn't sink? Will they cut the anchors? Can they weigh anchor without  the bridge section?

I guess the emergency generator was still running. The plan is to tow the wreckage further out to sea. The foreship is still floating. Regarding the aft, it looks more complicated. Bad weather, however, was hampering any operations on site actually.
