X-PRESS PEARL sinking
« on: June 02, 2021, 08:13:50 AM »
The burnt out container m/v 'X-Press Pearl' started sinking on June 2, about two weeks after the fire started off Colombo, which would be an even bigger environmental disaster. The damage to nature is already enormous due to the burning and leakage of chemicals and plastic. An attempt was made to tow the ship to deeper water, but this operation was aborted as the ship was increasingly unstable. President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa had previously requested this, so that the ecological consequences of the impending major oil spill were less serious for the Sri Lankan coast. The stern of the ship has already disappeared under water. The salvage operation has been aborted due to safety reasons. The country has already taken precautions to prevent nearby bays from being polluted by oil spills. The ship was carrying all kinds of chemicals and plastic. Much of it has ended up in the water, and nearby beaches were full of microplastics.
