The curious case of the "Talent Ace"
« on: April 14, 2021, 03:18:59 AM »
Hello all,

I've uploaded the photo of this vessel at a breaking yard in Mokpo, South Korea:

http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=3280537

There's also a brief description of what she was involved with.

Some details of her case can be found starting from the page 189 of the UN Security Council report:

https://www.securitycouncilreport.org/atf/cf/%7B65BFCF9B-6D27-4E9C-8CD3-CF6E4FF96FF9%7D/s_2019_171.pdf

And I am uploading a photo of her stern (not to hog the photo section of the site) here. It's visible how they did a half-a$$ed job of marking the "new" (and official!) IMO number (which was marked "correctly" in her engine room), ending up with "8973873" and not "8793873". Her other previous markings are also quite visible. How the wanted to get away with it is beyond me...

Hi Vlad,

I have also taken pictures of some ships with fake imo numbers, I think it was easier to get away with faking Imo numbers in the past than it would be today, and that this was more common than most of us thinks.
Here are three ships I have taken pictures of with fake imo numbers:

LING HAI Imo: 8990328 built 1989 in China, she was actually built in Norway in 1971 as BOW ELM Imo: 7113674, the Odfjell logo could easily be seen when I took pictures of her.

HAE SONG Imo: 9095981 built in North Korea in 1985, she was actually built in Croatia in 1977 as Jesus Menendez with Imo number 7418309.

LUCKY WINNER Imo: 8987670 built in China in 1981, she was actually built in Norway in 1971 as BARON BELHAVEN.

Brgds,

That's interesting, Geir, IMO numbers being deliberately changed. I've so far seen only cases where IMO numbers were wrong due to mistakes of those who were marking them...

Cheers

Vlad
