"MSC Lirica" on fire off Corfu
« on: March 12, 2021, 02:12:09 PM »
Here you go:

https://www.cruiseindustrynews.com/cruise-news/24549-msc-lirica-is-on-fire-in-corfu.html

I'd say there'll be rumors of many unsavory things, as in times without paying passengers insurance pays better...

From what I've heard, this is the end of MSC Lirica. Scrapyard rather than repair yard.

From MSC "The fire started in one of the ship's starboard-side fiberglass lifeboats on its sixth deck. From a preliminary assessment, there was no damage to the inside of the ship but only to her side due to the flames and the dense black smoke caused by the fiberglass lifeboats"

The vessel will be repaired according to MSC Cruises. Since the interiors are intact, they'll do a Star Princess on her and repair the area. Also the area of the fire corresponds to the part that was added to her during her November 2015 lengthening, so most of the fire was on the part that was added during her lengthening.

Even if that area was burned beyond repair, they could scrap only the extension and keep the remaining parts and reconnect them. Granted it would restore her back to her pre-2015 length, but they can always add a new extension to her later on.

So far, no updates on the MSC Lirica. I hope she is repaired and not sold for scrap.

After suffering a fire incident in Corfu in April, the MSC Lirica is currently in Malta. The ship is docked near the Palumbo Group Shipyard, in La Valletta.
