New service to Salford Quays.
« on: December 06, 2020, 02:11:45 PM »
Hi all,

There is a new service about to commence in to Salford Quays, formerly Manchester docks.

The ships will be discharged in one of the old drydocks,

The first ship will be Eastern Vanquish, she is currently just South of Penzance doing 9 knots.

It will be quite a sight to see a ship in the old docks as Salford Quays is now full of offices, studios, apartments, shops etc.

What are they bringing from Tonnay Charente?  Perhaps, as in former times, a full cargo of cognac.  The North-West could certainly do with some Christmas cheer.

Hi David,

You are certainly right, a full cargo of teachers whisky would be nice.

I have been told it is nothing more sinister than grain, you could still make whisky from that.

That explains why the dredgers SOSPAN DAU and DEO GLORIA together with the bed levelers NORMA and WD MICHEL were all working just off the old dry docks for much of October / November. Good to see new trade for the MSC & Salford.

Hello Monkstone Light,

Thanks for your comment and good observation.

The Eastern vanquish has just anchored at Liverpool bar.

Fog permitting, she should board her pilot about 02-00 hrs.

Arkonia was fog bound for a few hours this morning.

By the way, EASTERN VANQUISH is one of two (also EASTERN VIRAGE) owned by Eastern Shipping Ltd of Sutton Coldfield, near Birmingham.  Privately owned by Richard Lake, the company was founded in 2014 at the same time as he and a business partner were selling their Eastern Airways to Bristow Helicopters (last year Bristows, in financial difficulties, sold the airline all back to Lake).  Mostly under Dutch shipmanagement and commercially by Scotships/Intrada, the ships seem to have traded well.

Hi David,

Thanks for that recent information about the company.
I was glad it was Eastern Vanquish as i already have Eastern Virage.

I photographed her at 3 different locations in the pouring rain, will post tomorrow.

When i noticed ES on the funnel i thought it related to Esprit but noticed today that that is the name of the company who run the berth where she is discharging.
Still not exactly sure what her cargo is.

Thanks for bringing us the whole story.
Hopefully the voyage was a success, and that more will pass your picturesque vantage-points.

Good News that the grain trade to (I assume) Rank-Hovis has resumed.

Wishing a Bon voyage to this short-sea/inland trade and more traffic on the canal; less on our roads.

Hello Merv,

Thanks for your comment on this topic.

You are absolutely right, when our roads are grid locked and there is a canal that can take the strain, it seems crazy that cargo is shipped by road.

The case of the Arklows to Cargills, they come in spells throughout the year, sometimes as many as 6 one after the other then nothing for months, one shipment could take 150 trucks off the road.

Hello Teachers:

Anymore news from  the Manchester Ship Canal, and the grain trade in particular?

Thanks, Merv

Hi Merv,

Thanks for reviving this topic, unfortunately, we are still waiting for the second shipment if there is even going to be one?

We have just had 2 ships to the old steel works iron ore wharf at Irlam loading pumps, i beleive there are more to follow, i dont think we have had an Arklow to Cargills yet this year but i beleive they may be starting again soon, we have just had a scrap metal shipment, the cement run is quite busy but no gas tankers to Partington for over a year but the bottom end of the canal remains quite busy.

best regards,
David.
