Cruise ship sorties
« on: March 30, 2020, 09:16:11 AM »
Can anyone explain why Queen Victoria and Ventura left Southampton yesterday morning and raced down the Channel as far as Devon, before returning this morning and mooring up again in Southampton? The liner equivalent of taking your dog for a walk.

I asked the same question on another site regarding OCEANA leaving and returning to Dover. It was suggested it was to dump "grey" water. "Black" water is removed in port.

Around 250 litres / person / day of grey water are produced on these cruise ships.
Cruise ships in stby at Barbade go regularly in deep waters to drop their grey waters.

My wife and I were on the Ventura when both her engines broke down and she had to be towed into Santa Cruz, Tenerife. a few days later she had to be towed out into deep water to discharge her grey water. She was then towed back into port to complete the repairs.Seems a normal thing.

I would also just like to say P&O treated us very well.

Britannia is doing the same now.
I suppose that when all the 'guests' are disembarked, the generation of 'grey water' is much reduced. Surprised that some enterprising operator of a small tanker does not see a business opportunity here, to do it for them.

They also do it to de-salinate and make fresh water for the ship etc.
