REEFERS
« on: December 13, 2019, 03:32:58 PM »
Hi all,

Reefers are one of my favourite types of ships, i never saw one until i visited the New Waterway in the mid eighties.
Could anyone tell me which port is considered to be the busiest (geared) reefer port in the world, Bangkok must be a contender.
There are currently 8 reefers in port.

Valparaiso, Chile is one busy port in the summer season, however and due to the high capacity of the container ships to carry refrigerated containers the number of reefers has disminished.

Regards

Tomi.

Hi Tomislav,

thanks for the information.
I recently counted 12 reefers in port at Bangkok on Marine Traffic.

The fruit export season begins in Chile, for 5 months many reefers go and return almost the majority to the United States, we have only recently taken the third ship with its shipments, if you like see the link, it is my collection of reefers .
Cheers..

There are currently at least 9 reefers in port at this moment, i say at least because Marine Traffic is very poor over here for the last 2 months.

They are,
EURO STAR
CHERRY STAR
LAKE NOVA
JOCHOH
SEA REEFER
SEA STAR V
HUA FU 207
SEA GLORY 2
HAI FENG 728, currently inward bound.

JOCHOH, her voyage originated from the port of Manta,Equador.
Yesterday the SEA GLORY 2 arrived from Lae.
I beleive most or all of them bring in fish from very exotic places, probably the most expensive fish on the market.

Yes, the fish trades generate conventional reefer ship activity for Asian ports like Bangkok. The banana trades are also important - ports in Central America like Puerto Limon in Costa Rica are busy. Turbo in Colombia is another one I think. Also the Panama Canal sees transits, so worth watching here too. However, as others have said, conventional reefer ships are declining rapidly, as the container lines have hoovered up the majority of this business.

Gamcheon port in Busan, together with Busan anchorage is usually crawling with reefers, ranging from 50+ years old ones sailing under (usually) Russian flag, to freshly built "classic" reefers for South Korean owners. This, of course, is in addition to all the refrigerated container traffic, as Busan is one of the world's major container ports.

Bangkok does have more reefers posted here, but I think that's just because I've been lazy lately...

Thanks Neil and Lappino for your comments.

The EURO STAR is sailing in the morning.
The TIARA 108 is currently anchored awaiting a berth.

Ijmuiden in Holland also seems to be quite busy with reefers.
