define classification of charter-passenger vessel
« on: June 11, 2019, 02:08:50 PM »
http://www.shipspotting.com/gallery/photo.php?lid=3013666

For a second time I got reprimanded of a wrong classification;

Please define whether a charter vessel is a passenger vessel or a motor yacht,

to me (and AIS Marine Traffic and other sites) the proper classification for
Alaska Quest is passenger vessel and not a motor yacht.

Opinions please.

Hi Dirk,

I work in market intelligence for the superyacht industry and this would be a charter passenger vessel to us, as you can book an individual cabin rather than having to book the entire boat.

Best regards,
Ralph

On this website the category "passenger vessels" is the leading item for many subcategories and not a single defined category.

On this website the category "passenger vessels" is defined as for more than one passenger carrying vessel on the photo.

So for instance a ferry and a cruise ship, or a harbourtourboat and a yacht in one picture.

The first subcategory is called "cruise ships", defined as more than one cruise ship in the photo.

All other vessels has to be posted in the several subcategories such as cruise ships year1-year2, ferries, motor yachts, etc.

It is the responsibility of the poster / member to post into the appropriate category.

I have spent early this year many days in cleaning the leading category "passenger ships" and moving all single-ship-photo's to the approcriate category (by agreement with the webmasters)

The problem with many of the site categories is that they no longer reflect today's modern, multi-purpose shipping, and the descriptors used in to day's shipping industry. This just leads to confusion at time amongst members, as to which is the correct category for their photograph. This particularly applies to offshore vessels, which, due to modules that can be added or removed easily, may operate in different vessel categories on different voyages or charters. Many tankers are now equally capable of carrying crude oil, products and chemicals, and frequently do on back to back voyages to avoid ballast voyages. There is no category for con-ro's etc. It seems the same applies to some of the smaller passenger vessels.

However, there is no easy answer for this site, with over 2.5m photographs posted, it's too big a job to review those already posted, and would be too confusing to introduce new categories. The mistake was made at the outset, in trying to make the categories too narrow, but, unless someone is going to volunteer to undertake a review, I guess we're stuck with it.

Suggestions for practical improvements to the existing portfolio of categories are always welcome, or to the coverage/definition/naming of existing categories/subcategories.  The Admin group will review all proposals.

(Just a practical consideration: proposals which involve splitting existing large categories are probably unrealistic as every vessel would have to be moved manually)

But please use a separate forum thread if it is not about small passenger vessels.
