"Father-Son" Engine Room Configuration
« on: March 30, 2019, 04:26:23 AM »
It has been reported that the Viking Sky features a "father-son" engine room configuration IAW "Safe Return to Port" requirements for passenger vessels.

Please point me in the direction of finding a diagram of that, or similar vessel, engine room layout.

Thanks!

Still looking for engine room diagram for Viking Sky with the power plant split to two engine rooms separated by watertight and fireproof bulkheads.

The Shippipedia citation is too generic.

Thanks!

The single line diagram in this brochure gives a good idea of the configuration: one 12-cylinder ("father") and one 9-cylinder ("son") engine in each engine room. However, nothing short of the actual general or machinery arrangement drawings will give you a definite answer; the Significant Ships drawings about Viking Star excluded engineering spaces. However, considering the fact that the engine casing is aligned exactly with the main fire bulkhead, I'd say the engine rooms are located end-to-end: aft engine room in main vertical zone no. 1 and the forward engine room in main vertical zone no. 2.

Thanks Tuomas.  I have a copy of that brochure. Line diagram fails to meet my objective. Cheers!

No problem. I wonder if the Norwegian accident report will include at least a sketch of the engine room configuration. Of course, noting that there was no flooding, the relative location of the engine rooms within the hull is probably not relevant information.
