New category Fish Processors or Fish Factories

fish processor vessels like attached photograph are what they are:
fish factories or fish processors, and not reefers as the closest
current choice.

Any chance to add a separate category for these?

Thanks,

Dirk Septer

Thanks Dirk for noting this little gap.
Maybe not a new category, but maybe an adjustment to one of the existing sub-categories.
Under consideration by Admin colleagues.

David,
Thanks that's what I actually meant: just alongside reefers, etc.

the category "Near shore fishing vessels" doesn't keep a meaning since containing vessels over and below 21m which have its own categories, so it could be renamed to "Fish processing vessels", while existing photos from there could be discharged to "Fishing vessels" for further revision, so empty category will be available for the Fish processors.

just a version..

.....most easiest just to rename the category "Reefers in support of fishing vessels at sea" since mostly processors located there

there's a big difference between reefers and fish factories/processors.

To me, the "Reefers in support of the Fishing Industry" category has always seemed redundant. It is one of the only cases where the site identifies a vessel solely by its industry instead of its function, such as having a hypothetical case of "Tugboats in support of the oil industry."

My suggestion would be to move virtually everything that is an Equasis-classed as a Reefer Vessel to the actual Reefer Vessel categories, and leave the existing category to be re-established as "Fish Processors and Fishing Tenders," or something similar, as the majority of the vessels already in the category would be defined as the following two types:

Fish Processor/Factory: A self-propelled or moored vessel with no capacity to catch fish, but equipped with facilities to process and pack seafood:

Example: NORTHERN VICTOR (IMO 7204231)

Fishing Tender/Packer: A vessel classed by international or local authorities as a fishing vessel, but carrying no gear to catch fish, and only limited equipment for packing fish in ice. Most often used to ferry supplies and the catch of other vessels between a combination of fishing vessels, floating processors and shore-based processing facilities.

Example: BALAENA (IMO 7051450)

The whole category set up needs a revamp. Modern multi-purpose vessels often don't sit exactly in any one category, and often could be legitimately be classified in several. There is no category for con-ro vessels, which is an industry recognised category. There is no category for the newer type of windfarm support vessels. Offshore vessels in general are often multi-purpose, and have modules installed or removed depending on which type of work they are doing. The distinction between crude and product tankers is less pronounced now, with many vessels able to carry both, and frequently do on consecutive voyages. Even ro-pax is a possible new category.

However to revamp this would be a mammoth undertaking, and to make it work would require 1000's of photographs to be reclassified. Unless someone, or several people, can be found to do this, I guess we're stuck with what we've got.
