Southampton in Grand Alliance coup
« on: June 07, 2006, 06:29:08 PM »
Good evening everyone, following in Lloyds List:-

GRAND Alliance lines are to consolidate all their deepsea UK calls at Southampton Container Terminals later this year.

Four global carriers, Hapag-Lloyd, NYK Line, OOCL and Malaysia International Shipping Corp, are to shift all their transatlantic services from Thamesport to Southampton which already handles the consortium

This is brilliant news for Southampton. These six new services really will help SCT broaden its horizons away from the dominant Far East Trade.

I also understand that in the long term capacity is to be expanded to 4m teu. Presently 1.45m teu are handled.

This raises the question of perhaps re-application to build at least part of Dibden Bay??  ;-)

It is indeed EXCELLENT news for anyone concerned with SCT & the port.
On the back of winning this business SCT plans to order two super post panamax cranes with an outreach of 22 boxes and is also looking into plans to develop 201/202 berths which are currently used for cars.
With the projected growth in world trade & even with the new container terminals around the Dibden bay may still be needed in the future.
In my opinion ABP should have used Dibden bay to store cars thus keeping it as a brownfield site, then when plans to build a container terminal were submitted they may have been approved.

Re-developing 201/202 certainly would seem to be the best option in the short-term. These berths were of course the original container terminal in Southampton developed in the late sixties.

I dont think its really possible to extend any further up from 207 berth.

It will be interesting to see if ABP choose to re-apply to develop Dibden Bay. Your suggestion of Vehicle Storage would certainly be a good option. At the very least it would allow the mess of the Eastern and Western Docks to be sorted out.

I read about the Grand Alliance switch to Southampton with interest. As an enthusiast my nearest container ports are Tilbury and Thamesport although I do visit Southampton occsionally. Southamptons gain is the Medways loss. Already there are often times when Thamesport is completely empty and this switch will see the port considerably underused.Bearing in mind the planned developments/expansion at Thameshaven, Harwich and Felixstowe(?) which will give even more spare capacity I cannot see the government agreeing to any further applications to develope Dibden Bay.

I can't see the government agreeing to develop Dibden Bay, when they've already turned it down once on 'environmental grounds' (that didn't stop John Prescott - whose remit it is to give planning consent or not - agreeing to the new Brighton and Hove football stadium being built in a stupid and unsuitable place or putting hundreds of thousands of houses onto green field sites in the already overcrowded south east. Sounds like hypocrisy to me and more to do with a vociferous minority in Hythe than to do with birds and the environment).

Andrew - thanks for the information. It's nice to see some ships, which had left Southampton a long time ago, returning, such as Leverkusen Express, etc. :-D

From what I have heard, since Hyundai transferred from Southampton to Thamesport, they have stuggled at times with the volume going through the port.

With all the efficiences now in place down here, the Grand Alliance decided to consolidate to one port. This gives the obvious advantages such as transhipment possibilities.

From what I understand, Hyundai moved from Southampton in the first place because it thought that the port was getting too congested.

Faith, once Hyundai moved that then created congestion at times in Thamesport!
The congestion at SCT has been sorted out by a new vehicle booking system and a new way of unloading lorries when they arrive.
This has paved the way for a massive increase in productivity.
The first vessels are due in September.
