OGLEBAY NORTON FLEET SALE
« on: June 04, 2006, 05:08:33 PM »
Various sources report that on Tuesday morning, six ships of the Oglebay Norton fleet, those being the OGLEBAY NORTON, COLUMBIA STAR, FRED R. WHITE JR., ARMCO, MIDDLETOWN, and COURTNEY BURTON will enter a temporary layup for their second fit-out of the season as they undergo a change of ownership from Oglebay Norton to Liberty Steamship Company, a subsidiary of American Steamship Company.

At this time it is unknown what other changes may be in store for the fleet, or if they will receive new names or paint schemes at this time.

Rumors, however, have that Oglebay Norton wants any ships with names that tie to their company (OGLEBAY NORTON, COLUMBIA STAR, FRED R. WHITE JR.) to have a name change immediately.

Oglebay will continue to operate their three "River-Class" vessels: WOLVERINE, EARL W. OGLEBAY, and DAVID Z. NORTON, while they attempt to sell those vessels to an unnamed buyer currently in negotiations with Oglebay.

EDIT:

Reports indicate that the six vessels will receive the following name changes:
COURTNEY BURTON will become AMERICAN FORTITUDE
ARMCO will become AMERICAN VALOR
OGLEBAY NORTON will become AMERICAN INTEGRITY
COLUMBIA STAR  will become AMERICAN CENTURY
FRED R. WHITE JR. will become AMERICAN COURAGE.

These name changes, according to a friend who is connected to American Steamship, will come over the next week. He had no word on a name change for the steamer MIDDLETOWN.
